Why Chinese college graduates are now earning less than migrant workers
We discovered a few years ago that Chinese college graduates are now earning less than migrant workers. This year's crop of university graduates are struggling to find jobs with a monthly salary of 2,000 yuan. Yesterday, I showcased the starting salaries of American college graduates in 2009 on my blog; their average annual income was close to fifty thousand US dollars, or over three hundred thousand yuan. Meanwhile, property prices in the US are about the same as in China’s big cities (slightly lower in the US). American graduates can buy a house of over one hundred square meters within three years of graduating and a villa within ten years. However, a mainland Chinese netizen left me a comment saying that he graduated this year with a degree in chemical engineering and is only earning a monthly salary of one thousand five hundred yuan.
