If you happen to meet him, be sure to tell him that I still can't forget him. I think of him every day - his smile, the corners of his eyes, the lines on his hands, and our misunderstanding of love. When you're around, I cry; when you're not, I still can't stop crying. If one day, I accidentally bump into her, will you quickly remember my name, or will we pass by each other like strangers?
Tanya Chua - "If You Happen to Meet Him."
I've liked Tanya Chua's music for a long time. It's simple and pure, with a quiet and touching beauty.
The titular piece "If You Happen to Meet Him" is underpinned by simple guitar chords and warm string arrangements as Tanya narrates a story about encounters, commitment, and separation. It is loosely related to the plot summary of the movie "Yang Yang," like two parallel lines that occasionally travel together on the journey of life. Director Cheng Yu-Jie uses a lot of shaky camera shots and foreground-background focus relationships in the film to create an unintentional record of fleeting memories. All these are intricately tied to the artistic conception of "If You Happen to Meet Him." No wonder Tanya Chua and Cheng Yu-Jie were both greatly interested when they encountered each other's works. Cheng Yu-Jie even directed the music video for "If You Happen to Meet Him," extending the movie "Yang Yang" into a new story.
