Introduction to the plot of "Deer and the Cauldron": Wei Xiaobao, the son of a Yangzhou prostitute, was born into the bustling city life, idling away his days. All his knowledge of historical heroes comes from stories told in teahouses; he admires the heroes in these tales greatly. To be a hero, Wei Xiaobao, through sheer bravery, rescues a wandering martial artist named Mao Shiba who is in trouble. Grateful for Xiaobao's help, and also annoyed by his persistence, Mao Shiba takes him to the capital city of Beijing, where he is privately imprisoned by the old eunuch Hai Dafu to impersonate a little eunuch. He cunningly blinds the old eunuch Hai Dafu and kills a young eunuch named Xiaogui Zi, thus assuming his identity as a fake eunuch in the palace.
One day, after returning from gambling, Wei Xiaobao encounters a luxuriously dressed young man practicing martial arts who calls himself Xiao Xuanzi (a pseudonym for Emperor Kangxi), and they engage in a fight. This young man turns out to be Emperor Xuan Ye (Kangxi). Later, Wei Xiaobao becomes close friends with the young emperor Kangxi. The regent minister Ao Bai has formidable martial arts skills and wields great power that threatens the emperor’s rule, causing young Kangxi to distrust him.
