The Karate Kid Plot Introduction:

Dre Parker, 12, played by Jaden Smith, could have been the most popular boy in Detroit, but his mother, played by Taraji P. Henson, has relocated them to China for her job. Dre at first finds it hard to fit in until he meets his classmate Meiying. However, cultural differences make this friendship more difficult than it should be. To make matters worse, Dre earns the enmity of Meiying's boyfriend Cheng. Knowing only a little karate, Dre is easily beaten by Cheng. Lonely and without friends to turn to, Dre confides in Han, played by Jackie Chan, an under-the-radar kung fu master who is also the building's maintenance man. Han takes Dre under his wing. As the two work towards a climactic showdown with Cheng, they form an unlikely friendship. With Han's guidance, Dre comes to see that kung fu is not about fighting or revenge, but maturity and calm. He also realizes that standing up for yourself does not mean being a bully.
