Plot Introduction: Who would have thought that in over 20 years of tumultuous life experiences, he encountered six different women. They brought him immense joy and sorrow; fate intertwined their lives with his, pulling him from youth to old age — Wang Liang's fiancée, Yue Xiang, fell unconscious after donating blood for her critically ill younger brother. Her head struck the cement stove edge with great force. This loving couple was torn apart by unforeseen circumstances. Carrying an incurable heartbreak, Wang Liang left his hometown by the Xiliao River and sought a new life in Beidahuang (the Northeast Plain). It was the late 1970s, and rural China still faced many difficulties.
Two pure and beautiful girls from snowy regions, Xiao Qin and Ru Hua, simultaneously fell in love with Wang Liang. Xiao Qin’s family rented their house to Wang Liang's uncle, and she immediately developed a favorable impression of this young man who came from the "south" to Beidahuang to seek refuge with his uncle. Wang Liang's diligence, honesty, and simplicity, especially his healthy mind and body like the clear skies of Beidahuang, deeply attracted her, making her admire and become infatuated with him. However, Wang Liang's heart had already been frozen by sudden and heavy grief, and no matter how fervently she pursued him, it couldn't melt away his pain. Despite Xiao Qin's relentless efforts to warm up to him, Wang Liang could only politely evade her.
Moreover, Xiao Qin's mother, who claimed descent from Mongolian royalty, strongly intervened, adopting Wang Liang as a son according to local customs. This effectively ended any possibility of marriage between them. Allegedly, this was to honor a solemn promise made by Xiao Qin's grandmother before her death. Completely disheartened, Xiao Qin was forced to marry a local elementary school teacher against her will.
Ru Hua, a close friend of Xiao Qin who grew up together without secrets, initially experienced conflicting emotions while witnessing Xiao Qin's unrequited love for Wang Liang. When Xiao Qin finally gave up on Wang Liang, Ru Hua felt both worry and joy, unsure of what to do next. It was only through the sincere encouragement from Xiao Qin's family that Ru Hua gained the courage to openly express her feelings towards Wang Liang. Yet, Wang Liang remained unmoved, his heart still consumed by the memories of his past love. Eventually, Yue Xiang's mother traveled all the way to Beidahuang, persuading Wang Liang with heartfelt reasoning and even threats, which gradually led him to accept Ru Hua.
During the time Ru Hua was deeply immersed in their passionate romance, she was also extremely busy taking care of her sick father and tending to her bedridden sister, who suffered from post-childbirth complications. Despite her hectic schedule, she managed everything well, maintaining a cheerful demeanor. Unbeknownst to her, one drunken night at her sister’s house led to a grave mistake. That evening, she challenged her fisherman brother-in-law Hei Zi to a drinking contest, and in her intoxicated state, she lost her virtue to him. She confided her guilt and remorse to Xiao Qin, leading to fierce arguments followed by discussions on how to hide the truth from Wang Liang to avoid hurting him. In haste, Ru Hua married Wang Liang, and seven months later, she gave birth to a child clearly conceived out of wedlock with Hei Zi.
Confronted with Wang Liang's severe questioning, Ru Hua admitted everything truthfully. Carrying yet another kind of pain, Wang Liang had no choice but to leave Beidahuang and return alone to Liaoxi. Hei Zi, driving a horse-drawn cart in a frenzied pursuit, knelt in the snow with an axe in hand, pleading with Wang Liang: "You can cut me, kill me, but please don’t blame Ru Hua. Otherwise, I’ll chop myself right in front of you." Amidst the vast sky and open wilderness, Wang Liang's calm words made this Beidahuang fisherman feel deep shame and regret.
