The story begins in the early 1980s, in a coastal city in the north.

Liu Ruyan and Wan Shulin are both workers at a state-owned printing and dyeing factory. They have been married for five years but don't have any children, which has caused them to argue many times. Wan Shulin curses Liu Ruyan as a "chicken that doesn't lay eggs," even going so far as to threaten divorce and finding another woman who can bear him children. Liu Ruyan feels extremely wronged and heartbroken, crying to her sister. Her sister Liu Rumai works in a hospital and sympathizes with her sister, suggesting they undergo medical examinations to find out the cause of infertility. However, such tests were not widely available at the time, and since Wan Shulin values his face, he stubbornly refuses to go. Liu Ruyan has no choice but to try some folk remedies for conception, and it seems like she becomes pregnant. Wan Shulin is overjoyed. To take care of his wife, he even considers giving up a rare training opportunity. Liu Ruyan persuades him to prioritize his work, saying that she will be taken care of by her neighbors and sister, and there should be no issues. Sure enough, when Wan Shulin returns from a business trip, he learns that Liu Ruyan has already given birth to a baby girl named Jiani. He is very disappointed because he had hoped for a son. At this time, the country has announced family planning as a national policy, strictly controlling second children, thus completely shattering his hope for a son. In his frustration, he neglects Liu Ruyan and their daughter, indulging in playing cards and drinking all night, and even fooling around with a female worker from the workshop named He Lina. Unable to tolerate this, Liu Ruyan resolutely leaves him with their daughter. Later, through an introduction by her neighbor and colleague from the factory design room, Hao Weidong, she meets Bai Shaoxing, an engineer from the motor factory. During their first meeting, Liu Ruyan clearly states that she does not want her daughter to have a stepfather; only if he agrees to treat her daughter as his own and also agrees not to have more children will she consider dating him. In the same ward, there is another mother who gave birth to a girl, named Hua Hongying, who is a teacher. According to her, she once had a daughter who was lost in the hospital, so she had to have another one. Since she wasn't a first-time mother, she recovered quickly and took good care of Liu Ruyan. She also liked Jiani very much. Her husband, Yang Mingliang, is an official at the electromechanical bureau and happens to be Bai Shaoxing's superior. The two got along well. However, Liu Ruyan always avoided the Hua couple, leaving Bai Shaoxing confused. He didn't know that the daughter he raised as his own, Jiani, was actually the infant that the Hua Hongying and Yang Mingliang couple lost in the delivery room at the hospital! Originally, Liu Ruyan thought she was pregnant and went to the hospital for a check-up, but the doctor informed her it was a false pregnancy. After graduating from graduate school, Jiani started working at Yang Mingliang's company and was in a passionate romance with Hao Weidong's son, Hao Ning. Life was peaceful and leisurely. But one day, her ex-husband Wan Shulin, with whom she had split many years ago, suddenly showed up, questioning the origin of Jiani. It turned out that although Wan Shulin and He Lina had been married for many years without children, their marriage ended in divorce. However, after He Lina remarried, she quickly had a son. She had always harbored doubts about this. Now, knowing that her remarried husband had died, Wan Shulin proposed wanting to remarry. She insisted that Wan Shulin must undergo a urological examination. The results proved that Wan Shulin was naturally infertile! Thus, the origin of Jiani became a major issue. The astute He Lina immediately saw an opportunity to extort money from Liu Ruyan and what she assumed to be her "lover," Hao Weidong, demanding a 50,000 yuan "silence fee" from each. Completely baffled, Hao Weidong urgently contacted Liu Ruyan. Seeing that innocent people were now involved, yet unable to reveal the true origins of Jiani, Liu Ruyan reluctantly agreed to their demands and withdrew 50,000 yuan from their meager savings to hand over to He Lina.

Bai Shaoxing noticed his wife's unusual emotions and behavior and learned from his son Bai Shan that she had touched the family's savings, but out of trust and love for his wife, he simply observed silently without pursuing the matter further. It seemed that the storm had subsided. Unexpectedly, Yang Mingliang's daughter, Hua Mei (who is also Jiani's biological sister), fell deeply in love with Hao Ning but failed to win him, leading to her becoming depressed. One night, while driving drunk, she was severely injured in a car accident and her life hung in the balance. Her grandmother, who doted on her granddaughter, suffered another episode of mental illness. The Hua couple had to take care of both the young and the old, nearly collapsing under the pressure. Under these circumstances, Liu Ruyan disregarded her self-imposed ban and mobilized her entire family to help the Yang family overcome this crisis. Through interactions, she came to understand the pain the Yang family endured after losing their child, greatly shocking her conscience. Several times, she intended to confess everything to them, but fearing legal punishment and losing the hard-won happiness, she hesitated and did not reveal the truth.

Through close contact with Liu Ruyan and her daughter, the Yang couple deeply felt their kindness and the deep bond between mother and daughter, but also discovered some suspicious points. Especially when blood transfusions were needed for Hua Mei, they found out that Jiani's blood type perfectly matched their daughter's rare blood type, but did not match Liu Ruyan's or Wan Shulin's, making them almost certain that she was their lost daughter! However, they really couldn't believe that the kind Liu Ruyan could do such a thing, and upon learning that there might be another father for Jiani, decided to remain silent.

Under the meticulous care of the Hua couple and Liu Ruyan and her daughter, Hua Mei escaped life-threatening danger, but when she realized she would spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair, she became devastated and refused to eat or receive treatment. Knowing that Hua Mei deeply loved Hao Ning, Jiani brought Hao Ning to visit Hua Mei and secretly told her that if Hua Mei could recover, she would give up Hao Ning and set him free. Hua Mei regained the courage to live and resumed eating and receiving treatment. The grandmother's condition also improved and became clear-headed again. At this time, due to He Lina wanting to keep the "silence fee" for herself, Wan Shulin, in anger, revealed to Bai Shaoxing that he was infertile and that Jiani was the child of Liu Ruyan and another man. This was like a thunderclap for Bai Shaoxing. He couldn't believe that his beloved wife, with whom he had lived together for many years, could do such a thing! He demanded that Liu Ruyan explain the truth, otherwise he would divorce her. Liu Ruyan did not disclose a single word to him, but after making arrangements, committed suicide to atone for her sins.
