City of God Plot: The protagonist in "City of God" is not a person but a place. City of God was a shantytown in Brazil in the 1960s, and from the 1980s it became one of the most dangerous places in Rio de Janeiro.

The film tells the stories of many people, but everything is told through the eyes of a child: Busca, a black child born into a poor family. His small stature makes him fear becoming a criminal, and he is content with a low-paying job.

His environment is filled with violence, and he has no way to escape. However, his way of observing and exploring society is different from others; he has his own unique perspective on reality: because he possesses an artist's eyes that are good at discovering life. Eventually, he becomes a professional photographer. This may be his redemption...

Busca is not the true protagonist of this movie, nor does the development of the plot revolve around him. But his life gets entangled in this story, and through his observations of life, we see the film's condemnation of human degradation and endless violence.

The film is divided into three phases:

Late 1960s

Busca is an 11-year-old boy in the City of God, which refers to a poor town in the distant suburbs of Rio de Janeiro. One day, he sees a working photographer, and from that moment, he decides to make this his livelihood.

Dadinho moves to the City of God, also an 11-year-old boy whose dream is to become the most dangerous criminal in Rio de Janeiro. His evil nature was evident even when he was very young. Soon, Dadinho becomes part of the local criminals. He admires Carvalho and his gang, who intercept gas trucks and take over other second-rate armed gangs. It is Carvalho who gives Dadinho his first opportunity to kill, and as he grows up, killing becomes as common as everyday meals for him.
