In September 1949, after the triumphant conclusion of the three major campaigns—Liaoshen, Huaihai, and Pingjin—the remnants of the Nationalist forces retreated to the Jinma Islands. A portion of the Third Field Army advanced southward, with Wang Benli, the commander of the third battalion of the Red Sixth Regiment's Independent Division, and political commissar Li Shanque receiving orders to prepare for an amphibious landing operation. However, their mission ended in failure, with Li Shanque making the ultimate sacrifice. In memory of his fallen comrade, Wang Benli changed his name to "Wang Shanque."
The failure of the "Kinmen Sea Battle" prompted the high-ranking officials of the new People's Republic of China to strengthen the Chinese Navy. After the victory in the Korean War, Wang Shanque returned to the Red Sea region and joined the Navy, later marrying Doctor Xu Jinyun.
Dedicated to studying naval warfare tactics, Wang Shanque unexpectedly led a brilliant naval battle that brought him fame.
