The story of *Astro Boy* tells of Dr. Tenma's son, Tobyo, who dies in a car accident. Overcome with grief at the loss of his beloved son, he creates a robot with seven superpowers and 100,000 horsepower in his son's image as a replacement. Later, because Tobyo cannot grow up, Tenma sells him to a circus; after being abused by the circus, he is redeemed by Dr. Tezsuwa, Director of the Science Ministry, who renames him "Astro Boy" and takes him back to the Science Ministry. In his life thereafter, he sometimes suffers from discrimination for being a robot, but he always wants to build a friendly bridge between humans and robots and fight against evil forces.
