In September 1949, following the victories of the Liaoshen, Huaihai, and Pingjin campaigns, the remnants of the Nationalist forces retreated to the Jinma Islands. A part of the Third Field Army advanced to the south of the Yangtze River. Wang Benli, the captain of the third battalion of the Red Sixth Regiment of the Independent Division, and his political commissar Li Shanjuan received orders to prepare for a cross-sea landing operation. However, they suffered a crushing defeat. Commissar Li Shanjuan was killed in action, and in his memory, Wang Benli changed his name to "Wang Shanjuan."

The failure of the "Kinmen Sea Battle" prompted the high-level leadership of New China to strengthen the Chinese Navy. After the victory of the Korean War, Wang Shanjuan returned to the Red Sea area and joined the Navy, marrying Doctor Xu Jinyun.

Wang Shanjuan devoted himself to studying naval tactics and later accidentally fought a brilliant naval battle that brought him fame. However, double Ph.D. Ma Jiancheng dismissed him with contempt. During the construction of the long-wave station, Soviet aid was withdrawn halfway through. Wang Shanjuan strongly recommended Ma Jiancheng as the chief engineer and unexpectedly learned that Ma was actually his wife's first love.

The long-wave station experiments failed one after another, and Ma Jiancheng fled. Later, Wang Shanjuan and Political Commissar Lu Xinquan overcame opposition and convinced Ma Jiancheng to return. Ma Jiancheng risked his life to try again, and the long-wave station was finally successfully developed.

Lu Xinquan accidentally learned that Li Shanjuan had survived death many years ago. Li requested that Lu keep it a secret and hoped that his son Li Qiang would serve in the Navy in the future.

More than ten years later, Wang Shanjuan's son, Wang Haijun, wanted to go to college, but Wang Shanjuan insisted that his son join the military. Unable to reach an agreement, Wang Shanjuan angrily sent his son to serve as a cook on a supply ship. Ma Jiancheng finally agreed to become the director of the No. 509 Institute, but on the condition that Wang Haiyun be allowed to take the college entrance exam, which Wang Shanjuan refused.

Ma Jiancheng's report on "information platform construction" conflicted with the issue of "solving employee housing problems." The arrogant Ma Jiancheng stormed off to the supply ship, where he coincidentally met Wang Haijun and encouraged him to have lofty ideals.

Wang Haijun wanted to leave the army, leading to a fierce conflict between father and son. Wang Shanjuan felt lonely and tearfully remembered Li Shanjuan. Seeing his father cry for the first time, Wang Haiyun decided to stay. However, during a military exercise, he played a dirty trick and was sentenced to 40 days of solitary confinement.

Unexpectedly, this period of solitary confinement changed Wang Haiyun's life, as his academic performance soared. The usually proud Ma Jiancheng finally lowered his pride and sought out Political Commissar Lu to secure 30 million yuan in funding.

Li Qiang was admitted to the Naval Vessel Academy but was replaced by Lu Xiangdong, the son of Lu Xinquan. Lu personally apologized, and Li Shanjuan passed away with a smile. Wang Haiyun, Li Qiang, and Lu Xiangdong became the famous Three Musketeers at the Naval Vessel Academy.

Despite his father's opposition, Lu Xiangdong went into business and helped Li Meihua, drawing the attention of the police. After learning the full story, Lu Xinquan resolved the estrangement between father and son.

In 1995, after a lifetime in uniform, Wang Shanjuan retired.

In the new era, maritime defense became more important. Wang Haiyun and Li Qiang participated in the largest-scale deterrent military exercise in the history of the Navy, "Long Arrow No. 1." A fire broke out in the boiler room, and Li Qiang was seriously injured while saving his comrades. It was then that Wang Shanjuan learned about Li Qiang's background.

As an expert in China's maritime rights and interests, Ma Yu was invited to give a speech at the Boao Forum for Asia, receiving enthusiastic praise. Wang Haiyun excelled in both theory and practice, earning commendations from the Central Military Commission and the Navy Headquarters. In 2007, he was ordered to lead a fleet in a multinational joint military exercise, showcasing the strength of our Navy and national image perfectly, winning respect from all participating countries and successfully completing the mission.
