The drama is set in the late Qing and early Republican era, telling the immortal deeds of the renowned modern general Cai E in overthrowing the Hongxian imperial system, as well as his legendary love story with the famous courtesan Zhang Fengyun (stage name Xiaofengxian). Cai E was one of the few politicians with military talent and had once been a fervent youth who participated in sporadic uprisings at the end of the Qing dynasty.
