From江湖恩仇to Bravely Answering the Call of National Difficulties
In 1937, the Shanghai Bund was shrouded in the impending war clouds. The warships of Japanese imperialism had already aimed their gun barrels at this most prosperous metropolis in the East on the Huangpu River.
In a prison in Shanghai, Zheng Shusen, by nature timid, accidentally blocked the escape route of Pang De, the thirteenth death-row prisoner, on his first day as a jailer. Subsequently, the warden assigned Zheng Shusen the task of delivering food to Pang De. Over two years of interaction, Zheng Shusen and Pang De became friends. Faced with the death penalty, Pang De requested that Zheng Shusen be the executioner. In anguish, Zheng Shusen "executed" Pang De with his eyes closed and then resigned from his position as a jailer.
Entrusted by Pang De before his death, Zheng Shusen went to redeem Qiao Qiao, Pang De's lover and a famous courtesan. However, upon meeting Qiao Qiao for the first time, Zheng Shusen was struck by her beauty and grace, secretly harboring feelings for her. With unusual courage, Zheng Shusen forcibly took Qiao Qiao away from Qingyun Pavilion.
At this point, Zheng Shusen's adoptive father, who had already suffered from senile dementia, arranged for a matchmaker to bring him a bride - the widow Qin Shanbao, who arrived with her son Cao Cao, just as Zheng Shusen returned home with Qiao Qiao, who had nowhere else to go.
When Zheng Shusen and Qiao Qiao paid respects to Pang De, they discovered that Pang De had risen from the dead. It turned out that Pang De had colluded with the warden in advance, using Zheng Shusen's naive nature to stage a play; the bullet fired was a blank round.
Pang De had returned to the Shanghai Bund with hatred in his heart, seeking revenge for the destruction of his family and the murder of his wife by Yu Zhonghe, his rival in the Jianghu world. For years, he had lain low in prison. The cunning Pang De saw the heroism hidden beneath Zheng Shusen's outward timidity and attempted to turn Zheng Shusen into a tool for his own vengeance. But all Zheng Shusen wanted was to provide food for himself and his family and live a peaceful life.
As Pang De racked his brains over his revenge plan and Zheng Shusen struggled to achieve his small dreams, the ambitions of Japanese militarism became increasingly evident. The entire population of Shanghai was discussing rumors about the Japanese army planning to attack Shanghai. Under the call and leadership of underground parties and progressive organizations, an anti-Japanese wave surged through Shanghai.
Naive Zheng Shusen fell into the trap set by Pang De, becoming directly or indirectly involved in Pang De's revenge actions. During this process, Zheng Shusen repeatedly faced perilous situations but managed to escape them multiple times. Meanwhile, amidst the twists and turns of fate, Zheng Shusen befriended several comrades-in-arms: the vagrant Mantou, Liu Jingchen who yearned to become a teacher, the gangster Tang Weite, nicknamed "Monk" Xu Bu Kui, and Xie Risheng, a Northeastern girl who came to the Shanghai Bund to find her father. They became sworn brothers and started a small business together.
