Guan Yu and Zhang Fei were high school students, but due to their excessive passion for chivalry and righteousness, they had been expelled from twenty-four schools — thus earning the nickname "The Twenty-Four Schools!" Just as the two were feeling utterly despondent after another expulsion, a man with very large earlobes suddenly appeared. He introduced himself as Liu Bei, styled Xuande, a member of a fallen noble family who frequently changed schools because he couldn't afford the tuition fees.

Liu Bei proposed a plan: since he had noble bloodlines, he could attend the best aristocratic school in the country — the Eastern Han Academy. However, this school was extremely expensive and only open to royal relatives. Zhang Fei, being wealthy, said he could help pay the tuition fees. Liu Bei added that once the money issue was resolved, everything else could be solved. He suggested the three swear brotherhood so that they would all be considered royal relatives and thus eligible to enroll. The three then went to a scenic and meaningful place to swear their oath.

Just as they finished their final vow: "We do not seek to be born on the same day, same month, same year, but we wish to die on the same day, same month, same year," four people — Xiu, Wang Ddong, Ding Xiaoyu, and Wang Yase — suddenly appeared through a time portal from the Iron Space-Time into the Silver Space-Time. Due to Ddong accidentally dropping a coin that set off a chain reaction involving an empty can and a rock, the falling rock struck Liu Bei, killing him!

True to his word, Guan Yu wanted to follow his elder brother and die on the same day. Zhang Fei tried to stop him and managed to knock Guan Yu unconscious. They soon discovered Liu Bei was not dead but severely injured. After discussing with Ddong, Xiaoyu, and Yase, they decided to leave Xiu, who resembled Liu Bei, in the Silver Space-Time as a substitute to maintain the space-time order. Reluctantly, Xiu agreed. Meanwhile, the others took the seriously wounded Liu Bei back to the Iron Space-Time for treatment. When Guan Yu woke up and found out that "Liu Bei" (Xiu) was alive, he was overjoyed. Zhang Fei was also glad that they didn't have to die together. Thus, the three finally entered the Eastern Han Academy, where Guan Yu and Zhang Fei believed they could make a name for themselves.

The three hoped to graduate from the Eastern Han Academy, but its prominence attracted attacks from Gold High School and Hedong High School (where Dong Zhuo was the principal), repeatedly placing the academy in peril. Master Zuo Ci even set up the "Eight Gates Golden Lock Formation" at the school gates to prevent students from attending classes. Naturally, the trio took it upon themselves to break the formation. However, breaking the Eight Gates Golden Lock Formation wasn't easy; even Liu Bei (Xiu) and Xiao Qiao were trapped inside, facing life-threatening danger. Following the suggestion of Student Council President Cao Cao, they sought the help of Ma Chao, an incredibly resilient and cheerful young man, and Huang Zhong, Ma Chao's friend and an infallible marksman. Additionally, Zhao Yun, who had always been at odds with them, joined the group to break the formation and rescue Liu Bei (Xiu) and Xiao Qiao.

During the process of breaking the formation, Guan Yu saved Zhao Yun's life by shielding him with his arm during a critical moment. This act resolved the previous animosity between Zhao Yun and Guan and Zhang, leading Zhao Yun to acknowledge the five of them as brothers. From then on, they worked together loyally and successfully broke the Eight Gates Golden Lock Formation.
