Introduction to "Eight Thousand Women of Xiang Up the Tianshan":

In the early 1950s, after Xinjiang was peacefully liberated, the decision-makers of New China ordered the 200,000 troops stationed in Xinjiang to reclaim wasteland and farm, to take root in Xinjiang, and to be determined to change the situation of only one generation of garrison since ancient times, in order to achieve the strategic goal of long-term peace and stability. Under the call of the Central Committee of the Party to build Xinjiang, a grand wave of joining the army swept through the three rivers and four waters of Hunan. For a time, passionate women from Xiang province flocked to the ancient capital of Changsha to sign up for military service. Among them were literary youth Chu-Yu Zhuang, twin sisters Cai-Ling and Cai-Wei, maid Xi-Mei, as well as Yun-Jie Qiu and Yue Shen from Zhou Nan Girls' School, representing eight thousand women of Xiang who, with the beautiful wish to build the border regions and sacred youthful dreams, bid farewell to their relatives and friends, and traveled tirelessly to Xinjiang. Along the way, the women endured countless hardships. At their first stop—Xi'an—they encountered a car accident in which Cai-Ling tragically lost her life. Witnessing this tragedy, compounded by strong homesickness, Yun-Jie Qiu and Yue Shen deserted, but fate brought them back to the army. At that time, bandits still roamed within Xinjiang, waiting to seize grain and people, seriously threatening the advancing troops into Xinjiang. To ensure that the eight thousand women safely reached Xinjiang before winter, our army mobilized an elite force for reinforcement. Meanwhile, under the leadership of Chu-Yu Zhuang, the women used their umbrellas as weapons, cooperating with the troops to completely annihilate the bandits. In this operation, the women experienced both the passion and cruelty of war.

After months of arduous travel, the women finally arrived at the campsite of the Xinjiang-stationed troops. However, awaiting them were even more severe challenges: living in dugouts, eating boiled wheat with salt water, drinking bitter groundwater, and what they found hardest to bear was not being able to bathe for several months. Faced with these conditions, the women wept bitterly, unable to believe that the military life they had dreamt of would be like this.

The arrival of the eight thousand women brought the dawn of life to the vast wilderness. The male soldiers showed the greatest enthusiasm in protecting and caring for these younger sisters. The leaders of the troops hoped that these male and female soldiers could find love in their shared labor, completing the historical mission of two generations of garrisoning that their predecessors could not accomplish. The outgoing Chu-Yu Zhuang met her Prince Charming, Fang Xu, and launched a fierce offensive towards him. Among the other women, the honest Cai-Wei was first warmly pursued by the simple Tie-Shan Tong. After repeated setbacks, Tie-Shan Tong finally married Cai-Wei, forming a revolutionary couple. The other women also took on this historical responsibility without hesitation, writing new chapters of revolutionary romanticism, idealism, and heroism on the vast desert and Gobi with their youth and beliefs!
