Storyline of Field of Wheat: This is a story that takes place over five days and four nights in the Warring States period.

Luyi, a small city in the Zhao State. Three years ago, just after the lord Jucong (Wang Xueqi) married the young and beautiful Li (Fan Bingbing), he led all the adult men of his clan to join the battle between Qin and Zhao at Changping. Every day, Li and the women, children, and elderly waited for the news that Zhao had repelled Qin so the men could return home...

At Changping, the Zhao army was defeated, and the Qin army slaughtered the captured Zhao soldiers overnight; the scene was both cruel and tragic. Qin soldier Xia (Huang Jue), driven by the desire to return home for the harvest, quietly left the battlefield. On his escape, Xia met a young Qin soldier Ze (Du Jiayi). The two, with vastly different personalities, went from suspecting each other to embarking on the journey home together. Meanwhile, one after another Qin military patrol teams were setting up traps to capture deserters from both Qin and Zhao...

At dawn, the unconscious Xia and Ze appeared by the river in Luyi and were saved by the women. Upon waking, they learned they were in Zhao territory and were terrified, so they lied and claimed they were from Zhao. The women of Luyi were delighted to see the two 'Zhao soldiers' and hoped to hear news about the war and their men, thus treating them with the best hospitality.

The two Qin soldiers knew that the men of Zhao had already died in the massacre. In order to survive, Xia and Ze fabricated a lie in front of the excited women of the whole city, claiming that Zhao had defeated Qin. Upon hearing this, the entire city celebrated. Xia and Ze were regarded as heroes of Zhao, experiencing a kind of glory they had never felt before.

However, Lady Li, the wife of the city lord, and the priestess (Wang Ji) remained calm and had some unclear suspicions about the entire event. But perhaps lies are easier to accept than the truth... And the danger of the city being massacred gradually loomed over everyone's head...
