On the 18th, TBS announced that the famous novel "The Bureaucrats' Summer" by economic novelist Sanroku Jonai would be adapted into a TV drama starring Koichi Satoh. The show will air in the 9 PM slot starting in July.
This book was originally serialized in "Weekly Asahi" and published as a novel in 1975. Satoh plays Fukuhiro Shin吾, a vice-minister of international trade with a strong sense of responsibility for rebuilding post-war Japan. Satoh said, "This is a great project that hasn't been seen in the past 10 to 20 years. It must become a unique drama in today's television industry. I personally find it very challenging."
Due to Japanese administrative reforms, the current public impression of high-ranking bureaucrats has become extremely negative. Producer Hideki Izuno decided to make this drama: "I hope the audience can see how these men worked hard to lead the once internationally uncompetitive automobile and electrical industries to their current level. I hope everyone can see their proud work." Satoh also passionately stated, "There is a kind of masculinity in them that today's 'herbivore men' lack."
Also starring are Kin'ya Kitaoji, Masato Ibu, Katsuhito Takahashi, and Noritaka Takahashi, all veteran actors over 40. A senior official at TBS said, "We hope that viewers will be inspired on Sunday evenings and then start their work on Monday with great enthusiasm."
