Passionate young women from Hunan gathered in the ancient capital of Changsha to sign up for military service. Among them were literary youth Zhuang Chuyu, twin sisters Cailin and Caimei, servant girl Xiaomei, as well as Qiu Yunjie and Shen Yue from Zhou Nan Girls' Middle School, representing the eight thousand women of Hunan who left their loved ones behind and traveled tirelessly to Xinjiang with dreams of building the frontier.
On the way, they endured countless hardships. In their first stop, Xi'an, an accident occurred where Cailin tragically lost her life. Witnessing this tragedy and overwhelmed by homesickness, Qiu Yunjie and Shen Yue deserted but fate brought them back to the army.
