Introduction to the Plot of "Out of Breath":
Frank, a Chinese national in his early fifties, has been having a rough time recently. The family business, a cheese-making company passed down from his great-grandfather's generation, has hit a bottleneck under his management. The company has been consistently losing money and is on the verge of bankruptcy. Currently undergoing treatment at a detox center, Frank is struggling with quitting drugs, experiencing extreme emotional fluctuations—being called 'dad' when he's doing well, and 'bastard' when he's not. With no choice due to his divorce, he feels he has let his child down. Like most ordinary people in the world who desperately try to escape misfortune, Frank decides to take a huge risk. He plans to package the company nicely and sell it to an unsuspecting victim, then abscond with the money, fleeing far away from America with his beloved daughter and a conscience that will take a long time to recover.
In short, Frank painfully decides to be a villain once.
Thanks to globalization, "the earth is flat," and the buyer surprisingly comes from across the ocean—a Chinese man shows strong interest in purchasing this "high-profit" company. His name is Li Qiang, from Beijing. Thus, Frank embarks on his journey to China.
Upon landing, Frank hits a stroke of luck; he happens to be the 888,888,888th guest entering China, which is considered extremely auspicious in China. Frank becomes a VIP nationwide, unknowingly becoming a celebrity for a while. Before he can fully enjoy this fame, bad luck strikes again—his number lock suitcase gets lost, causing him immense stress, and subsequently, he temporarily loses his hearing...
Frank rushes directly to the hospital from the airport, where he meets the buyer, Li Qiang. This person has a fiery temper and appears restless. What Frank doesn't know is that this man is currently in even worse shape than himself.
Li Qiang has been having an extremely tough time lately. His company is in severe financial crisis, dealing with triangular debts. His office is filled daily with creditors, while the debtor invites him to sing karaoke without ever mentioning repaying the debt, leaving Li Qiang to foot the bill... This is on the professional front. On the personal side, his wife not only fails to understand his hard work outside but also firmly believes that he is having an affair with his female secretary Ming Chen over a baseless matter, constantly suspecting him... His son, studying in the U.S., recently returned home for vacation but stays out all the time. Even when he does come home, he says nothing, as if suddenly turned mute... Additionally, there’s another unfortunate thing only Li Qiang knows—he was found to have a shadow in his brain, possibly cancer. Li Qiang falls into deep depression, seeing signs of death everywhere... A person's spirit cannot handle multiple worries simultaneously without breaking. When Frank arrives, Li Qiang has already convinced himself that he will die soon. He is determined to secure a stable future for his wife and son before his death, thus deciding to purchase Frank's "profitable" overseas company.
Of course, the deal does not progress as quickly as Frank hopes. Li Qiang currently has no money. To stabilize Frank and buy time, he sends his beautiful secretary Ming Chen to show Frank around Beijing first, while he goes off to resolve the financial crisis of his company.
