Admiral Onishi Takajiro (played by Aratoh Masaneto) proposed to form a kamikaze air force team to bomb enemy ships and use the remaining forces to delay the enemies as much as possible. Captain Seki (played by Dekaba Kosshi) quickly started to implement the admiral's plan. A few months later, the U.S. military launched an amphibious operation. The Japanese army set up a special attack base at Chiran Airport in Kagoshima to defend Okinawa with all their might. The Tomiya Restaurant near the airport was designated as the dining place for the army. Torihama Toma (played by Kishie Kazuko), who ran the restaurant, watched over this group of young pilots with maternal love, and the members all regarded her as their mother. Students from Chiran Girls High School were also dispatched to help at the base, including Toma's daughter Reiko (played by Dabe Mikako). One day, Lieutenant Bardou (played by Kubozuka Yosuke) came to see Toma. He was ordered to sortie soon and wanted Toma to deliver a message to his family before he left. Thus, the illiterate Toma slowly wrote a letter on behalf of Bardou. Lieutenant Tabata (played by Tsudoi Michitaka) failed multiple sorties and was criticized by his comrades-in-arms. Tabata told Toma: "Japan will lose." Upon hearing this, Lieutenant Nishi (played by Tokushige Satoshi) became furious, punching Tabata and calling him a coward. Nishi saved Ichie (played by Nakagoshi Noriko) during an air raid, and they developed feelings for each other. Nishi believed that it was his duty to die generously to protect the ones he loved. After failing his sortie and returning to the base, Bardou was assigned under Nishi's command. Toma was arrested by the military police for helping the members send private letters. Bardou went alone to rescue Toma from the military police headquarters but failed. After being released, Toma angrily questioned the military police captain why they had to impose strict curfews and inspections on these young people who were prepared to sacrifice themselves.
