Xuan Minzhu's husband passed away due to a car accident, leaving her to support her son Cui Zhenyu on her own. She works at a restaurant during the day and drives for others at night to make money. Zhenyu is very understanding; in order not to worry his mother, he chose not to attend an expensive academy but instead studied at a regular school, where he consistently ranked first in all exams.
Zhenyu was selected by his school to participate in an English competition. When Minzhu accompanied her son to the competition, she met her high school classmate Yin Xiumei, who had come to accompany her daughter Zhiyuan. Xiumei looked down on Minzhu because she lived north of the river and her child didn't attend an academy. It was the first time Minzhu realized how academically competitive students from the southern district were.
Another high school classmate of Minzhu's, Li Meijing, is vain. To elevate her social status and gain respect from her stepson Junxiong, she insisted on publishing a poetry collection. She asked Xu Shangyuan, a Seoul University graduate and former journalist, to write a recommendation letter for the publication. Shangyuan, feeling unfulfilled in his career, agreed to write the letter for the money. During the new poetry collection launch, Meijing's naive poems caused everyone to burst out laughing, and Shangyuan, feeling embarrassed about writing the recommendation letter, sneaked away.
Zhenyu did not perform well in the competition because he hadn't attended an academy or undergone any language training. His teacher suggested that Minzhu send Zhenyu to an academy for further study. Minzhu sought advice from Xiumei regarding the academies in the southern district.
