Plot Summary:

The story takes place during the Anti-Japanese War in the Baiyang淀 region of Hebei. It tells of a young hero named Yulai who uses his familiarity with the watery environment to engage in a battle of wits with the Japanese invaders and ultimately defeat the enemy. Yulai is a very mischievous child and also a "respected" child king; whenever he goes out to play, almost all the children follow him. Thus, in order to skip school, Yulai engages in a "tug-of-war" with the teacher.

In the process of "competing for the children," the teacher suffered from many of Yulai's pranks, but the teacher quickly overcame Yulai, and all the children followed the teacher back to the classroom, leaving Yulai quite disheartened.
