★Plot Summary: In wartime Shanghai, four housewives play mahjong under glaring daylight, their diamond rings flashing during the shuffle. The hostess Mrs. Yi’s husband is the head of Wang Jingwei’s intelligence agency; among the three guests, two have husbands working for the Wang regime. The youngest "Mrs. Mai," Jia-zhi Wang, is officially the goddaughter of Mrs. Yi, but she alone doesn't wear a diamond ring. However, her glossy red lips and her beautiful six-sided face can withstand the harsh spotlight, accentuating her "bosom peaks." She met Mrs. Yi two years ago in Hong Kong. After Hong Kong fell, Mr. Mai's business stopped, and Jia-zhi came to Shanghai as an independent trader, staying at Mrs. Yi's home. The petite Mr. Yi stands behind his wife watching the game, giving Jia-zhi a secret signal when he finds an opportunity. Jia-zhi pretends to have something to do, bids everyone farewell, and takes the Yi family car out, instructing the driver to stop at a café before sending him back. Then she enters the café to make a phone call, exits, and hires a rickshaw to go to another café where she waits for Mr. Yi. Jia-zhi was originally a student at Lingnan University. Before Guangzhou fell, Lingnan moved to Hong Kong. When Wang Jingwei arrived in Hong Kong, she and several classmates, filled with the spirit of exiled students eager to serve their country, spontaneously organized themselves into amateur spies and devised a honey trap plan: a female student would get close to Mrs. Yi, then seduce the prominent figure near Wang Jingwei, Mr. Yi, luring him out and eliminating him. Naturally, the lead actress of the school drama club, Jia-zhi Wang, was chosen as bait. Unfortunately, the fish didn't bite, and the plan failed.

After the Pearl Harbor incident and the reopening of sea routes, these students transferred to Shanghai and connected with a Nationalist Party spy. This spy strongly encouraged them to continue their operation, so Jia-zhi reconnected with Mr. Yi. Today was the day they had set up a trap to assassinate Mr. Yi at the agreed location. After waiting for a long time, Jia-zhi finally saw a charcoal-powered car approach, clearly his vehicle. She went out, got in, and Mr. Yi instructed the driver to head to Fokaisen Road for a rendezvous. Jia-zhi said there was a nearby store where she wanted to repair an earring, and naturally, Mr. Yi couldn't refuse. The car turned around, crossing the street from Yili Biscuit Shop to Ping'an Theater. Opposite was the Kaisinger Café.

Entering the jewelry store, after arranging the earring repair, Mr. Yi voluntarily proposed fulfilling his promise to buy Jia-zhi a diamond ring as a keepsake. The Indian owner received them on a loft between two floors, selecting a six-carat pink diamond ring for Jia-zhi to try on. “It was extremely bright, shining like a strange star, red with a mysterious allure.” Jia-zhi knew that the assassins were already in place. In “this moment stretched taut with tension, almost eternal,” she questioned whether she had fallen a little in love with Mr. Yi. Seeing the tenderness and care in his expression, she suddenly thought, “This person truly loves me.” But it was too late. She softly said, “Hurry, leave.” He immediately understood, leaped down the stairs, and bolted out the door. The car screeched to a halt. Bang! Was it the car door or gunfire? The car drove off.

Mr. Yi returned and immediately ordered a lockdown, executing all captured individuals, including Jia-zhi Wang. He again stood behind his wife watching the game, thinking about Jia-zhi. “He felt her shadow would forever accompany him, comfort him. Even though she hated him, her final feelings for him were so intense that what kind of emotion it was didn’t matter anymore—only the emotion mattered. They were primitive hunters and prey, tiger and伥, the ultimate possession. Only now could she be considered truly his person in life, his ghost in death.”
