Plot introduction:
The TV situational comedy "The Story of the Crew" revolves around the process of a TV production team filming a period drama. Through showcasing the thoughts, behaviors, and work-life situations of the main members of the crew, including the director, leading actors, and the production manager, it reveals the dazzling state of China's current film and television circle and the laughable quirks.
The production manager (played by Gong Hanlin) is named Gong Xincheng. Male, about 45 years old. He has been with the crew for a long time, familiar with various matters within the industry. He is smart, capable, eloquent, humorous, sociable, worldly-wise yet warm-hearted. To save funds, he spares no means; often caught between the pressure from the cast and crew and the investors. He is essentially kind but has many small flaws.
Gong Xincheng finally obtained the script for his dream project, a period TV series called "Passion and Hatred in the Sky." The first round of investment was successfully secured, and he ambitiously began gathering his team. His first thought was to recruit Zhou Jun (played by Zhou Yingnan), who is well-liked in the industry, widely connected, and loyal to him, as the assistant director. Zhou is 25 years old, passionate, open-minded, sincere, but sometimes impulsive, frequently flattering, yet always missing the mark. He dreams of one day becoming a real director.
Under Zhou Jun's recommendation, the crew hired a somewhat renowned director, Li Dapeng, who is 35 years old and studied film in the UK. He believes that TV dramas are not true art and dreams of directing a masterpiece movie. He often starts his sentences with "When I was in London," showing severe self-love and considering himself an art master. However, faced with the harsh reality where everyone needs to support their families, he finally put aside his pride and agreed to direct this TV series.
Li Dapeng first recommended actress Sun Bingbing, with whom he shares a vague relationship, to play the female lead, Rong Gege. Miss Sun is 23 years old, graduated from a prestigious art school, just started her career, and considers herself ready to become a star. She can be both cunning and naive at times.
Sun Bingbing recommended her senior classmate Chen Baoming to play the male lead, Prince Wu Bei. Mr. Chen is in his early 30s, acted in some second-rate TV dramas, has a good appearance but lacks acting skills. He is stingy but pretends to be generous, artificial, cowardly, yet likes to make loud noises.
The investors sent their cousin Jin Yuzhu (played by Jin Zhu) to serve as the external liaison producer and supervise the financial situation of the crew. She is in her early 40s, fiery-tempered, decisive, brave enough to take responsibility, upholds justice, and often discovers some underhanded dealings of the production manager. Everyone fears and respects her. She understands the difficulties of the crew members and secretly helps them solve various problems.
Based on her understanding and analysis, Jin Yuzhu believed that the cast of this crew was not strong enough. To ensure the smooth distribution of the show and recover the investment, they needed to hire a big-name star with appeal. Following her suggestion, the investors decided to hire the popular actress Fan Feifei as the female lead. Fan is 28 years old, has been famous for many years, looks down on everything, gives orders arrogantly, is vain and shallow, feels good about herself, and exhibits many of the common flaws of famous actors, which makes her disliked by others. Yet, she often steps up in critical moments, helping the crew overcome many difficulties, gradually gaining understanding and acceptance from everyone.
Fan Feifei's joining made the director and Sun Bingbing very unhappy. Despite their reluctance, they eventually had to compromise. Sun Bingbing stepped down to a supporting role, playing Fan's maid Cuihong. Sun felt extremely unbalanced mentally, believing that her own conditions were no worse than Fan Feifei's. In secret, she competed with Fan, trying every way to get the director and screenwriter to add more scenes for her, causing much trouble. In the end, she always ends up being outsmarted by her own cleverness, ending in failure.
Assistant Director Zhou Jun empathizes with Sun Bingbing's predicament...
