Plot Introduction:

Grew up in a small fishing village on a certain island. Had a good relationship with the great pirate Shanks who temporarily stayed in the fishing village, thus aspiring to become a pirate. The scar below his left eye was self-inflicted to prove his toughness (indeed tough, sweat). However, when Luffy was 7 years old, he unknowingly ate the Devil Fruit - the Gomu Gomu no Mi that the pirates had stolen, and from then on, he could never learn how to swim.
