What is Google App Engine?

App Engine is almost a Web application engine. It bundles many functions that are provided in separate packages by AWS: storage functionality similar to S3, self-scaling and processing capabilities akin to EC2, and database functions similar to SimpleDB. At the same time, App Engine also offers some capabilities that AWS does not have, such as a Python environment, Google APIs, and potentially some free services. App Engine more closely resembles other Web platform services.
