In 1919, Peking University established the Department of English with Hu as its head. So far, it has an 83-year history. Peking University's Department of English is one of China’s first batches of Master and PhD postdoctoral programs in Foreign Language and Literature and the first national key discipline point. It boasts a complete range of research strengths. The English graduate program offers five professional directions: English literature, English linguistics, American studies, translation studies, and English education, with a three-year school system. Guangdong University of Foreign Studies offers doctoral programs in English Language and Literature and Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, with Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics being a national key discipline. In 1965, it began enrolling undergraduate students in English Language and Literature. Graduate student enrollment started in 1978, and in 1981, it conferred Master's degrees.
