The United States is flying a high-altitude drone over Japan's Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant for a closer look and to assess the extent of the damage that has occurred in the reactor buildings. The unmanned aircraft is equipped with infrared sensors and cameras that provide useful clues about what is happening inside the reactor buildings and determine the extent of the damage. It also warns of potential further damage. Conditions at the plant worsened on Wednesday as radiation levels increased, forcing Japan to temporarily order workers to evacuate the plant. Subsequently, the USA warned its citizens living within 50 miles of the area to evacuate. Pentagon spokesman Col. David Lapan said that the U.S. was responding to Japan’s request for assistance, which required moving troops within a 50-mile radius, and noted that troops were given anti-radiation pills before missions to check areas. U.S. flyers have been conducting search and rescue missions in Japan. They will also operate a Global Hawk drone and U-2 reconnaissance aircraft to help Japan assess the damage from the disasters. A magnitude 8.9 earthquake hit Japan last Friday along with a tsunami, causing the cooling systems in several reactors at its Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant to fail, leading to recent explosions and radiation leaks in the area.
