According to reports (reporter Li Yizhong, correspondent Long Qing) A man named Zhang from Shuan An township in Jiangxia District 17 years ago colluded with classmates, impersonating policemen on National Highway 107 to intercept vehicles with non-local license plates and rob drivers of their belongings. After the case was uncovered, his two accomplices were arrested and sentenced to death and life imprisonment respectively, while the other two received sentences of 15 and 13 years in prison. Yesterday, based on clues found in a graveyard, the police of Jiangxia District captured Zhang in Nanhu community in Wuchang.
Between September 10th and 29th in 1994, Zhang, along with Yuan, Wang, and seven others, carried handcuffs, electric batons, tear gas, and other tools for committing crimes. Dressed in police uniforms, they roamed around areas such as Shipo Township on National Highway 107, impersonating police officers under the pretext of checking vehicles and searching for fugitives. They intercepted ten passing trucks from places like Jiangxi, Shandong, and Hebei provinces, robbing the owners and cargo owners of more than 50,000 yuan. After the case was uncovered, the Jiangxia police arrested Yuan, Wang, and five others. Zhang narrowly escaped and became an online wanted criminal. Investigations revealed that after Zhang committed the crime, his father moved the family away from Shuan An township and disappeared. His three sisters also changed their names and lost contact.
During this year's "Clear Web Operation", the police revisited Shuan An township for investigation and found that all of Zhang's direct relatives had vanished. It was only known that his mother passed away not long after Zhang fled. The police thought there must be information about his relatives on her tombstone, so they inquired about the location of Zhang's mother's grave. However, the villagers said she wasn't buried locally.
The police then searched all cemeteries in Jiangxia district for Zhang's mother's tombstone. After examining over 1000 tombstones, they finally found her grave in Zhi Fang Happiness Mountain Cemetery. All the children's names on the tombstone had been changed. The police discovered that Zhang's name had been changed to Zhang Jie.
Focusing on "Zhang Jie", rural areas have seen frequent cases of cattle and sheep theft in recent years. Netizens are calling for cutting off the black hand. The police conducted investigations throughout the city and found traces of Zhang Jie in a police report. In 2010, a woman in Nanhu Garden Community in Wuchang reported domestic violence, which was recorded by the responding police officer after mediation. The police found the original police report, retrieved Zhang Jie's photo, and identified him as Zhang who fled years ago. Under the alias "Zhang Jie", he was selling lottery tickets at a sales point in Nanhu, Wuchang.
Yesterday noon, the police rushed to the sales point and captured Zhang. Zhang confessed that after the case broke out, he fled overnight to Shantou, Guangdong Province, then worked in Kunming, and secretly returned to Wuhan in 1997.
