Hunan Daily, January 4th —— On November 14, 2011, a brutal domestic violence incident occurred in Shun Tian Gold Coast Residential Area in Kaifu District, Changsha City. Wealthy merchant Cao stabbed his wife Liang Hong 11 times. In the process of self-defense, Liang Hong also inflicted serious injuries on her husband. The trigger for this event was merely 37,000 yuan.

On the 3rd, Liang Hong shared her unfortunate experience with our reporter and hoped to receive advice from everyone.

The Conflict Over 37,000 Yuan

When the reporter saw Liang Hong at the hospital on the 3rd, she had been lying in bed for one and a half months.

Liang Hong recounted that the incident began on November 13, 2011. That day, her husband Cao suddenly started hitting her with punches and kicks. The reason was that Liang Hong, who hadn't received living expenses for several months, had taken the 37,000 yuan that Cao had prepared for a business trip without permission.

The next morning, Cao proposed a divorce, indicating that he wouldn't give Liang Hong any property, and attempted to grab the 37,000 yuan back. During the struggle, Liang Hong suffered severe beatings. Cao smashed her head with a DVD player and then grabbed a pair of large scissors, repeatedly stabbing her head and neck. In self-defense, Liang Hong picked up a fruit knife and stabbed her husband before losing consciousness.

Liang Hong sustained 11 stab wounds, two of which were particularly severe: one pierced through her left throat, severing the vocal cord nerve; another caused a scleral rupture in her left eye. "The doctor said her vocal cords will never recover," said her sister-in-law Yu Yanni.

As Wealth Increases, Warmth Decreases

"Back then, we both worked tirelessly from dawn till dusk. It was tough, but we were happy." Liang Hong recalled meeting her husband in 1989. Although he had a low level of education and a disabled right hand, she defied her family's opposition and married him. After marriage, they sold small oil goods in Si Mao Chong, clothing in Cai E Road Garment City, drove taxis... Their hard work gradually improved their lives. Later, they ventured into telecommunications equipment trade and now own three companies, multiple storefronts, and a villa.

Although their wealth has accumulated more and more, the warmth in their family life has decreased. Liang Hong remembered that in 1994, when she was eight months pregnant, she was severely beaten by her husband because she refused to do housework. For over a decade after that, domestic violence continued to escalate.

"Now he wants a divorce!" Liang Hong cried uncontrollably in her hospital bed. She said that during the company registration process, her husband claimed that marital relationships couldn't hold shares, so he took sole control of the company's management. "I've thought about divorcing many times before, but I endured it considering our child was still young." Now, unfamiliar with the law, Liang Hong is unsure whether she should proceed with the divorce and how to protect her rights.

Wife Will Not Leave Empty-Handed

"I heard from the doctor that his injuries are serious. His liver and lungs were injured, and he broke a rib," said Cao's fellow patient. Cao hasn't been discharged yet and went to Liuyang to buy traditional Chinese medicine.

Our reporter contacted Cao, who is currently in Liuyang. "Family matters are too complicated to explain clearly at once. We definitely have to get divorced." Cao stated that divorce procedures are underway, and the property distribution method he initially proposed has been denied by his wife. "She also drafted a divorce agreement. She definitely won't leave empty-handed." Currently, the Furong North Road police station has launched an investigation. ■ By Journalist Li Qi, Intern Sui Wenli
