Work with Dignity

At the age of 56, Gordon also became a professional model.

"People ask me why I don't write a book about my experiences," Gordon said, "I say that everyone has their own story. I enjoy listening to people tell their stories because everyone has gone through a lot. I'm not unique; I've just lived longer and worked all my life."

Previous centenarian awardees included lawyers, engineers, journalists, entrepreneurs, architects, real estate developers, and professors.

Gordon has four children, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Her husband, Robert Gordon, passed away in 1969.

"I will work until I can't anymore," she said.

"The Outstanding Oldest Worker in America" is selected annually by the American "Experience Matters" organization. This year marks its 12th edition. "Experience Matters" is the largest non-profit organization in the U.S. that provides community services, training, and employment opportunities for older job seekers.

Born in 1909, Gordon currently serves as an assistant sergeant-at-arms in the Nebraska legislature, a position she has held for 26 years. During the annual legislative sessions, she helps with daily security checks.

At 101, Sally Gordon was selected as the 2010 "Outstanding Oldest Worker in America" and received her award on October 10 at the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln.

"I hope that when I reach her age, I still maintain youthfulness and vitality," Heinen said, "We can still get some fashion advice from Sally."

Mild Temperament

Gordon has been working for 84 years and continues to work in the Nebraska legislature.

Gordon is a descendant of Russian immigrants. She attributes her longevity to a healthy diet, regular exercise, and maintaining a sense of humor.

Rich Experiences

Gordon's work experience is indeed rich. Before becoming an assistant sergeant-at-arms, she served as a secretary for three Nebraska governors, worked in several state government agencies, and also worked as a court clerk, retail store clerk, and advertising professional.

Despite being 101 years old, Gordon still has no plans to retire, "at least until the next legislative session resumes in January next year."

This year, Gordon shared the award with a male recipient, Emilio Navarro, a 104-year-old Puerto Rican immigrant. Navarro was once a professional baseball player who founded his own company in 1952. He still works as the company auditor, putting in 30 hours per week.

On the day of the award ceremony, Gordon wore a black suit with silver lace cuffs, a black wide-brimmed hat adorned with circular patterns inside, and a silver-gray silk scarf around her neck, exuding elegance.

As an employee with rich work experience, Gordon advises young people entering the workforce to "learn as many new skills as possible, be good listeners, treat colleagues kindly, and understand your job responsibilities."
