By reporter Li Wei Qiang, news report - "Unbelievable, there's a giant gecko in the neighborhood," on the evening of October 29th, a green "giant gecko" suddenly appeared in the courtyard of the Putian City Seed Management Station. This gecko was half a meter long, ten centimeters wide, and entirely green. It remained motionless on a first-floor window as several young citizens put on gloves to attempt capturing the "giant gecko."
The reporter dissuaded the citizens from their risky behavior and contacted the Putian City Animal Protection Center.
At around 7 p.m., as the sky had completely darkened, people in the courtyard anxiously awaited the arrival of experts. About half an hour later, Director Wang of the Putian City Forest Protection Office arrived at the scene. The staff started their car and directed the headlights towards the window where the "giant gecko" was located.
When Director Wang set up the ladder and climbed it bare-handed without any tools to catch the "giant gecko," the citizens watching below were worried for his safety, fearing that the "giant gecko" might bite him. In less than a minute, Director Wang successfully captured the "giant gecko" with one hand. A kind citizen voluntarily provided a plastic bucket to hold the "giant gecko."
"This is actually a lizard, and it is the first time we have discovered a foreign protected species," explained Director Wang. It was the first time that a foreign wild protected animal was found in Putian. This lizard is a foreign species, classified as a critically endangered level one protected animal. Currently, it cannot be determined which specific category it belongs to. It is preliminarily judged that someone smuggled it into the country from a foreign market as a pet. According to reports, this type of lizard can cost tens of thousands of yuan each. Individuals must obtain permits from relevant departments to keep lizards as pets; otherwise, they will face legal consequences.
That night, the staff took the lizard to a temporary zoo in Hanjiang for care.
