Immunohistochemical Study of Large Bowel Carcinoma and Chronic Ulcerative Colitis by Kuang Xiwen et al. Institute of Oncology, Hengyang Medical College. Monoclonal antibody Hb3 against large bowel carcinoma was used to study 20 large bowel carcinomas, 60 chronic ulcerative colitises (CUC), 12 normal large bowel mucosas, and 12 fetal large bowel mucosas by immunohistochemical method. The results showed that the positive rate of Hb3 binding to large bowel carcinoma · CUC, normal large bowel mucosa, and fetal large bowel mucosa were 80%, 41.7%, 8.3%, and 100% respectively. In addition, the positive rate of Hb3 binding to CUC in the rectal site was higher than those in the colonic site, which agreed with the fact that large bowel carcinomas are easily found in the rectum. Authors considered that the expression of tumor-associated antigen in CUC is a very early biochemical abnormality before morphopathological changes. The present results further support that chronic ulcerative colitis is a precancerous disease of large bowel carcinoma. Therefore, Hb3 immunohistochemical investigation was beneficial for follow-up of CUC and study of the relationship between CUC and large bowel carcinoma.
