At 9 o'clock on July 11, 2010, Xiao Yu (a pseudonym) from Dongjing Commercial City received a text message: "Report the car as stolen tomorrow morning. Don't tell anyone, please." The text was from Wang, a fellow townsman from Shaoyang. At the same time, less than 5 kilometers away from Dongjing Commercial City on Wanjieli Road, a broken baby stroller was found in the middle of the road, and a 4-month-old baby boy lay in a pool of blood. The traffic police had cordoned off the scene. A traffic accident had just occurred here.

However, the Hunan-based identity information of "Liu Shijie" investigated by the police did not match Wang's description. In Ningxia, a "Liu Shijie" was discovered whose description basically matched, but when the police showed Wang the photo of this "Liu Shijie" along with photos of 31 other Liu Shijies, Wang told the police, "None of these are photos of Liu Shijie."

A month later, the hit-and-run driver Wang was arrested in Liaoning. Last April, the Yuhua District Court sentenced Wang to three years and ten months in prison. Recently, the second-instance court upheld the original verdict.

After the accident, Wang did not stop the car but instead stepped hard on the gas pedal and left the scene.

Judge: "Didn't you say last time that what you wrote down had no hidden evidence, and you would bear legal responsibility?"

Judge: "The evidence about 'Liu Shijie' that you wrote down during the previous trial, after further detailed investigation by the police, this person does not exist."

Reporter Ren Wenjing, intern Li Mingru, Changsha reported.

A month later, Wang was arrested. At this point, he denied telling Xiao Yu that he had hit someone, claiming instead, "The person driving at the time was not me, but Liu Shijie. I was sitting in the passenger seat." Wang told the police that he had asked "Liu Shijie" to stop the car, but Liu didn't stop, and he even attempted to grab the steering wheel.

Wang: "... Then I am still willing to bear legal responsibility."

Wang: "I have other evidence."

All investigations pointed to one fact: The "Liu Shijie" mentioned by Wang was fabricated to avoid responsibility.

Judge: "Do you have any other evidence to prove your innocence or mitigate your guilt? You can write these pieces of evidence down and take legal responsibility for them."

Even Wang's wife and mother said they had never heard of this person.

On the day of the incident, Wang was invited by his fellow townsman Xiao Yu for dinner. Around 7:30 PM, after finishing dinner, Wang borrowed Xiao Yu's car, saying he had something to do. Knowing that Wang didn't have a driver's license, Xiao Yu refused. While Xiao Yu was playing cards, Wang took the car keys and drove onto Wanjieli Road.

In court, Wang and the judge played "hide and seek."

For the identity of "Liu Shijie," Wang vaguely said they met in Shenyang. Regarding "Liu Shijie's" family situation, address, whether there was proof that "Liu Shijie" was driving, or "Liu Shijie's" friends and contact information, Wang responded uniformly, "I don't know."

The audience in the courtroom burst out laughing upon hearing this.

Wang, originally from Shaoyang in Hunan, was doing business in Liaoning.

Meanwhile, Yang was pushing a baby stroller, walking with her mother-in-law, preparing to cross the street. "Just before reaching the center guardrail, I saw a black sedan about 20 meters away. I thought I could make it across, but halfway through, I heard a 'bang,' and then I fell to the ground." Yang was knocked down, helplessly watching as her son's stroller was thrown into the air and crashed heavily onto the ground.

After three trials, last April, the Yuhua District Court sentenced Wang to three years and ten months in prison. Subsequently, Wang appealed. Recently, the Changsha Intermediate People's Court believed that many parts of Wang's defense were illogical, self-contradictory, and unable to hold together. The indirect evidence in the case formed an evidence chain, proving that Wang fled after hitting someone with his car. The second-instance court ruled to dismiss Wang's appeal and uphold the original verdict.
