Samsung Electronics has taken a step closer to spinning off its liquid crystal display (LCD) unit after board approval of the plan, the company said on Thursday. The unit, to be called Samsung Electronics Display Co Ltd as a new company, will be launched on April 1, it added. The move, which still requires shareholder approval, comes as demand for LCD products is slowing and profits are falling. Samsung said it plans to focus on new technology to keep its competitive edge. "The spin-off will allow us to make faster business decisions and respond more quickly to customer needs," said Donggun Park, executive vice president and head of Samsung's LCD business.
