Two American social organizations, SumOfUs and Change.org, have announced that they have gathered signatures from about 250,000 people for their petition against worker abuse. They plan to protest Apple Inc. at the Apple retail store in New York's Grand Central Station at 10 a.m. local time. This move may further affect the already strained cooperative relationship between Apple and its contract manufacturers. As of yesterday afternoon, a reporter from the Economic Information Daily saw on the official website of Change.org that the petition titled "Apple: Protect workers making iPhones in Chinese contract factories" stated, "Would it make you feel sick to know that your beloved Apple products are actually produced under such terrible conditions? It is not uncommon for these conditions to cause permanent loss of manual labor capacity for its employees. Men and women working in these factories often work long hours doing repetitive tasks, which can put repeated stress on their hands and wrists, usually causing them to permanently lose their manual labor capacity." Regarding this, Li Yi, the standing deputy chairman and secretary-general of the China Mobile Internet Industry Alliance, told the Economic Information Daily, "The reason behind the occurrence of this signature protest event in the United States may not only be due to considerations of environmental assessment and human rights. The United States is currently on the eve of a major election, and the employment situation is very severe. President Obama has publicly stated that there are problems with employment in U.S. high-tech companies and that the real economy is hollowing out. Therefore, government-driven factors cannot be ruled out behind this."
