Sina Technology News, February 8th morning message, the Internet company, Beijing Unicom (Weibo) has started a broadband speed-up project from this month. The original 512K will be upgraded to 1M, 1M will be upgraded for free to 2M, 2M will be upgraded for free to 10M, and the optical fiber community can be upgraded to a maximum of 20M.

In November last year, Beijing Unicom once stated that it would carry out free broadband speed-up by the end of 2011. However, at the end of last year, many Unicom users found that Beijing Unicom's promise of "free broadband speed-up by the end of the year" was not fulfilled. However, starting from January this year, Beijing Unicom began to officially implement the broadband speed-up project.

An insider from Beijing Unicom revealed that since the broadband speed-up involves the对接of access networks and core networks in various regions, for stability reasons, this speed-up will be divided into three batches according to regional divisions. The original ADSL users can be upgraded from 512K to 1M, 1M to 2M, and 2M to 10M. Optical fiber communities can be upgraded to 20M.

From an internal document on Beijing Unicom's broadband speed-up, it is learned that the first batch of speed-up work started on January 20th and completed broadband center speed testing on February 3rd, implemented by 22 local Unicom branches such as Shijingshan, Sijiingqing, Lugou Bridge, Jinyu Pool, and Pinggu. The second batch of speed-up work started on January 29th and is expected to complete broadband center speed testing by February 12th, implemented by 42 local Unicom branches such as Beitaipingzhuang, Shuangjing, Shunyi, Miyun, and Yanqing. The third batch of speed-up work started on February 3rd and is expected to complete broadband center speed testing by February 19th.

However, insiders from Beijing Unicom also expressed that since this speed-up includes both ADSL and optical fiber, after the broadband speed-up, due to the bandwidth limitations of ADSL, the improvement may not be very noticeable to users. The most noticeable improvement will still be for optical fiber users.

Beijing Unicom has been planning the broadband speed-up plan for a long time, starting the fiber-to-the-home transformation business from 2009. Last year, Han Dingjin, director of Beijing Unicom's Social and Informatization Office, once revealed during a guest appearance on Sina Weibo that by the end of 2011, Beijing Unicom's 20M household capacity had reached 73%, with plans to achieve universal 20M broadband by the end of 2012.
