"Air 'Testing and Remediation Companies' Proliferate with Many 'Fakes'"

After the Morning Post published an article on July 27 titled "Too Chaotic! Air Testing Also Involves Appraising Jewelry," it drew widespread public attention. Reporters have recently learned that in response to the chaos within the indoor environmental remediation industry, the Shanghai Indoor Environmental Purification Industry Association will launch a "Summer Purification" hundred-day campaign, starting with its member units to rectify the current state of the industry.
As citizens become more aware of indoor air quality, a variety of indoor environmental purification enterprises have appeared on the market. However, some companies that sound official and authoritative may, in fact, lack even a laboratory.
Secretary-General Wang Fang of the Shanghai Indoor Environmental Purification Industry Association stated that after investigating various advertising enterprises online, they found many companies like to use words such as "center" or "platform." However, according to current registration records, apart from the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center registered with the Municipal Administration for Industry and Commerce and the Technical Supervision Department, there are no other air testing enterprises named "center."
"From the perspective of the industry association, it is indeed difficult to regulate non-member enterprises, but consumers can still identify genuine from fake among the various air testing companies through various preventive measures," said Wang Fang. For example, if a company's name includes both "testing" and "remediation," then one should be cautious. According to the registration management requirements of the Municipal Administration for Industry and Commerce and the Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau, a company cannot be both a tester and a remediator. Therefore, experts recommend that citizens need to be vigilant when choosing such enterprises, especially guarding against "fakes" with names like "Testing and Remediation Company" or "Testing Center (Platform)."
It is understood that the Shanghai Administration for Industry and Commerce and the Quality Supervision Department have already focused on the enterprise qualification verification of the indoor air testing industry. When selecting an air testing company, it is recommended that consumers verify the other party's business license, whether they have a laboratory, and whether they possess a metrological certification certificate issued by provincial-level or higher quality and technical supervision bureaus for "screening and identification."
How to Identify the Qualifications of Air Testing Enterprises:
- The formal name of a legitimate remediation company is generally "Environmental Technology Co., Ltd." or "Remediation Company," rather than "Testing and Remediation Company," because during industrial and commercial registration, testing and remediation cannot be used simultaneously. However, if the enterprise provides agency remediation services, this is also considered legal.
- A legitimate remediation company uses only its registered name on its website, not virtual names like "Testing and Remediation Center" or "Official Website of Indoor Environment." Remember, when querying online, do not just look at the name; the key is to check the product.
- When you preliminarily select an air remediation company, you can request to view the company's business license to see if its scope of operations includes "environmental services."
- Check if the purification products used by the company have functional reports and safety reports issued by quality inspection departments for formaldehyde, benzene, and other pollutants.
- The market guidance price for the remediation service industry is generally between 20 yuan to 40 yuan per square meter. If the price is very low, it might indicate malicious competition.
- Self-inspections conducted by portable detection instruments before and after remediation by remediation enterprises must not incur additional charges because, according to the law, such data can only be used for scientific research and self-testing.
