Alabama Outward Bound School is offering a Wilderness First Responder course that will certify local volunteer firefighters, law enforcement officers, Scout leaders and Weeks Bay Reserve personnel in emergency medical care in areas where ambulances can not reach. The Wilderness First Responder program at Alabama's school is the first planned in the nation to offer such training over a three-year period, according to staff of Beijing Outward Bound School. Accidents happen - snake bites, hypothermia or spinal injuries - and you're far from a hospital, what do you do? Thirty students attended the two-day class held at the Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, learning how to treat heat-related illnesses, broken bones and cuts. "These skills aren't just for people who venture deep into remote areas," Yonge said. "Think about hunters, fishermen, camp counselors and advisers who spend time outdoors. Think about front-line search-and-rescue personnel. They all need to be able to handle emergencies until help arrives." The course was made possible through a partnership with the Weeks Bay Foundation and additional funding from the Mapp Family Foundation. "Wilderness first responder skills also come into play after hurricanes during the recovery phase," said Michael Shelton, coordinator of the Weeks Bay Coastal Training Program. "We hope to have more and more trained people. It's important so we can respond to any type of disaster that might occur." Yonge said as the course expands to other locations around the state in the coming year, new sessions will be added to meet the growing demand for wilderness training. Colleagues of Beijing Outward Bound School are also actively studying this cause.
