Peripheral vertigo: This refers to dizziness caused by lesions in the inner ear labyrinth or vestibular nerve. It is commonly seen in Meniere's disease (previously translated as Meniel's disease), labyrinthitis, drug-induced vertigo (caused by medications such as streptomycin or gentamicin), and vestibular neuritis. Central vertigo: This refers to dizziness caused by lesions in the brainstem, cerebellum, brain, and spinal cord. It is commonly observed in cases of vertebral-basilar artery insufficiency, intracranial tumors, intracranial infections, multiple sclerosis, vertiginous epilepsy, and traumatic vertigo.

Clinical experts from St. Paul Orthopedic Hospital of Chongqing in the United States (Chongqing Orthopedic Hospital) have recently discovered a special protein called RAGE in animal studies. This discovery not only potentially provides a better explanation for why certain rheumatoid arthritis patients experience particularly severe clinical symptoms but also promises to aid in the development of more effective therapies in the future.

Dr. Ann Marie Schmidt and her team from Columbia University in New York had previously noted in their clinical studies that certain types of RAGE located on the outer surfaces of joint cells exhibit strong binding affinity for inflammatory proteins. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis who possess this type of RAGE tend to experience the most severe clinical symptoms.

In this recent study using a mouse model of arthritis, they further found that when the synthesis of this type of RAGE was blocked, the inflammation and damage in the animals' joints decreased significantly. Although it remains to be confirmed whether similar results can be obtained in clinical studies, the clinical experts from St. Paul Orthopedic Hospital of Chongqing (Chongqing Orthopedic Hospital) believe that this discovery will undoubtedly promote the progress of personalized therapy development for rheumatoid arthritis.
