#### Introduction to Advanced Custom Search Engine Management

A custom search engine consists of an engine XML specification and a set of annotations. You can use the wizard to create a custom search engine without worrying about writing any XML. However, some features are not available through the form-based interface. To use these features, you must configure your custom search engine to use XML.

Similarly, you can add one website (or URL pattern) at a time to your custom search engine via the control panel or use Google Bookmarks to do so. To add a large number of websites to the search engine at once, you can upload a file containing a list of annotations in one of the formats described in this document.

Another reason to upload annotations in one of these file formats is that you can associate scores with URL patterns, a feature currently unavailable in the control panel or Google Bookmarks. These scores can be used to control the ranking of search results.

Finally, if you have a scattered list of websites in a format like OPML, you may prefer to upload an OPML file rather than typing individual URLs.
