The concept of "Web 2.0" began during a conference, emerging from a brainstorming session between O'Reilly Media and MediaLive International. Dale Dougherty, considered an internet pioneer and Vice President of O'Reilly, observed that, contrary to what was termed the "crash," the internet had become more important than ever, with exciting new applications and websites appearing with surprising regularity. More importantly, the companies that had survived the initial dot-com bubble seemed to share some common traits. Could the bursting of the internet company bubble mark a turning point for the internet, giving meaning to the call for "Web 2.0"? We all agreed with this perspective, and thus the Web 2.0 conference was born.
