The older brother, recalling Zhang Xiaoqiang, is still very sad. Wang Fei/photographed. The Express Newspaper reports: "I haven't slept for several nights, always thinking about this child, it's too regretful!" Mr. Feng from the Sanyan Village in Zhouqu County mourned the loss of his distant younger cousin Zhang Xiaoqiang, "He promised Premier Wen to 'persist in living', and after 10 hours he was successfully rescued, but on the way to the hospital, he lost his life at only 15 years old."

After being buried, he called for help under the rubble.

On the morning of August 8th, residents of Yuanyang Village and Sanyan Village began searching through the rubble for their family members. Around 7 o'clock, Mr. Feng from Sanyan Village heard cries for help coming from beneath a pile of rubble in Yuanyang Village, "Following the sound, I found it was Xiaoqiang." Mr. Feng quickly called Zhang Xiaoqiang's family and relatives, as well as rescue troops who had already arrived at the scene.

"My brother-in-law asked him if he was injured, and his response was loud, just like normal conversation; he said that his legs were trapped by something, but there were no other serious issues," thus the family and soldiers began the rescue operation.

According to Mr. Feng, within this pile of rubble, five people were buried, including Zhang Xiaoqiang's father, sister, and one female classmate of his sister (who had been confirmed dead at the time), while both Zhang Xiaoqiang and his mother still showed signs of life.

Premier Wen encouraged them to hold on.

In the afternoon of that day, when Premier Wen Jiabao visited the disaster area to check on the victims and rescue personnel, he gave milk to the rescuers who were aiding Zhang Xiaoqiang's family. Upon learning that there were still survivors in the rubble, Premier Wen spoke to Zhang Xiaoqiang and his mother at the entrance of the rescue tunnel: "Villagers, please hold on, the soldiers are saving you."

Mr. Feng recalled that at the time, Zhang Xiaoqiang responded to Premier Wen's call, "Premier, rest assured, I can endure." Although the voice was somewhat faint, it was very clear. "Please hold on a little longer, we will rescue you immediately," Premier Wen Jiabao encouraged again.

Three batches of soldiers took turns to rescue.

Mr. Feng said that the distance between where Zhang Xiaoqiang was buried and the rescuers wasn't far, "Passing a bottle of mineral water, he could reach it," but digging was exceptionally difficult. From 7 o'clock in the morning until around 5 o'clock in the evening when he was rescued, three different teams of soldiers had taken turns digging.

Mr. Feng, who participated in the rescue efforts on-site all along, said that when Xiaoqiang was pulled out, he was unconscious, with swollen legs but without any fractures or other serious injuries. Unfortunately, on the way to the hospital, Xiaoqiang stopped breathing. (Yin Hui, Wu Sunlin, Wei Xiaoli)
