Centipedes are terrestrial arthropods with worm-like bodies, belonging to the class Chilopoda. Their bodies are composed of many segments, each with a pair of legs, hence the name multi-legged animals. During the day, they hide in dark places, coming out at night to hunt worms, insects, and other small animals. Centipedes, along with snakes, scorpions, geckos, and toads, are known as the "five poisons," with centipedes being the most potent among them.
Rearing Centipedes:
1. Living Habits: In natural conditions, centipedes generally inhabit slopes, fields, roadsides, or grassy areas, or reside near wells, woodpiles, and gaps between bricks and tiles, especially favoring damp, old grounds. They are active mainly during the night and rest during the day. When temperatures drop below 10°C, they stop eating, and at -7°C, they enter hibernation.
2. Reproduction Characteristics: Centipedes have a lifespan of only 6 years. After reaching sexual maturity, they usually mate in the early mornings after rain showers in March-May and July-August. After 40 days, they begin laying eggs. Female centipedes lay fertilized eggs on their backs to ensure timely hatching. Each female can lay eggs for 2-3 hours at a time, producing 80-150 eggs per session. The egg surfaces are covered in mucus, sticking together to form egg clusters. During the hatching period, female centipedes do not eat or drink until the young centipedes hatch.
3. Feed: Centipedes are typical carnivorous animals with a broad diet, particularly fond of various insects like mealworms, crickets, scarab beetles, termites, cicadas, dragonflies, spiders, flies, bees, and their eggs, pupae, and larvae. They also consume earthworms, snails, and meat, organs, blood, cartilage, and other parts of livestock and aquatic animals. Additionally, they eat fruit peels, potatoes, carrots, tender vegetables, milk, bread, and other foods.
4. Breeding Pool Construction: Artificial centipede breeding can be done using tanks or pools. For tank breeding, use old pottery jars or ceramic jars, preferably with a diameter of over 0.5 meters, buried about 20 cm into the ground with the opening facing down, pressing the surrounding soil firmly. Inside the tank, bricks or mud blocks are stacked, approximately 10 cm lower than the tank's rim, leaving some space between the blocks and the tank walls. If using intact jars, do not remove the bottom; simply stack the mud blocks inside. A jar with an 80 cm diameter can hold around 200 adult centipedes.
For pool breeding, the pool should be built in a sunny, well-ventilated, easily drained, damp, and quiet place, either indoors or outdoors. Constructed using bricks or stone blocks, with cement smoothing the surface, the pool should be 80 cm high, with an area of 5-10 square meters being appropriate. Around the pool's edge, attach smooth plastic film or enclose it with glass forming a 15 cm wide, right-angled inner lip. Approximately 500-900 adult centipedes can be placed per square meter.
5. Management Points: 1. Prevent centipedes from escaping; they are quick-moving, so preventive measures must be in place. 2. Pay attention to breeding density, grouping and separating centipedes based on their size changes. 3. Manage temperature, humidity, and lighting, maintaining a quiet environment. 4. Ensure cleanliness of the feed, avoiding pesticide-contaminated bait. 5. Regularly observe and prevent predators from entering the breeding area. 6. Prevent mold in food and soil. 7. Remove sick centipedes promptly.
Breeding Methods:
1. Box Breeding: Use wooden boxes sized approximately 55 cm long, 45 cm wide, and 30 cm high. Attach a layer of non-toxic plastic film to the inner walls and fit an iron mesh lid. Place multiple boxes in suitable indoor positions, stacking them if necessary. At the box's base, place multiple layers of tile pieces spaced 1.5 cm apart, supported by cement pads. Typically, stack 5-6 tiles together, leaving gaps for centipedes to rest. Before placing the tiles in the box, wash them thoroughly and soak them in water to maintain humidity. Periodically replace the tiles with new ones to maintain moisture and hygiene.
2. Tank Breeding: Use large ceramic tanks with diameters of 50-60 cm and heights of 80-100 cm. Position them appropriately indoors, filling the bottom with crushed stones or broken tiles. Cover with a 30 cm thick layer of fertile garden soil, slightly leveled. Stack tiles on top similarly to box breeding, ensuring the topmost tiles are about 20 cm below the tank’s rim. Cover the tank's mouth with an iron mesh lid to prevent escapes.
3. Pool Breeding: Build breeding pools either indoors or outdoors with brick and cement structures. Maintain warm, cool, damp, and quiet conditions within the pool. Indoor pools are typically about 2 square meters each, rectangular, with heights of 50-60 cm. Smooth the inner walls with cement without any gaps and line them with agricultural plastic film or embed a 20 cm wide glass strip above the pool. Avoid cementing the pool's bottom; instead, first lay a 10 cm thick layer of small soil clumps and then stack 5-6 layers of tiles, leaving 1.5 cm gaps for resting and egg-laying. In cold regions, dig a 50-60 cm deep pit along the pool wall, fill it with stones, broken bricks, and tiles, creating spaces for winter hibernation. Cover the pool's mouth with an iron mesh or plastic mesh lid.
When bitten by a centipede, immediately wash the wound with soap water, apply cold wet compresses locally, or use pounded fish mint and dandelion for external application. Seek medical treatment immediately if systemic symptoms occur.
