■ Security Manager Staked Out to Catch Thieves
At around 3 PM yesterday afternoon, in the Crown Garden residential area in Yanliang district of Xi'an, upon hearing that the reporter had come to interview about Li Shuhong, Ms. Zhou, who was sitting next to a computer at a small supermarket, jumped up from her chair. "He was a good person, it's such a pity that he died!" Ms. Zhou said that Li Shuhong had an accident right outside the supermarket.
At 10:40 AM on October 7th, Li Shuhong was on duty in the residential area and passed by Ms. Zhou's supermarket. "I was taking down the curtain, and he saw it and came in to help." After finishing the work, they chatted for a while. Li Shuhong was usually very humorous and quite muscular, so the homeowners in the residential area liked to call him "Fatso." "Fatso, now that you're so fat, don't you think it's time to lose some weight?" Ms. Zhou joked.
At around 10:50 AM, Li Shuhong's phone rang. After answering it, his face turned serious. "I have something to do, I'll be out for a bit," Li Shuhong greeted them briefly and hurriedly walked to the roadside. Ms. Zhou felt a bit strange and followed him out. At this moment, a bread van drove over, and Li Shuhong signaled for the driver to stop. "The car stopped but did not turn off the engine. They exchanged some words. Suddenly, the bread van started, and Li Shuhong grabbed the door with one hand and tried to grab the steering wheel with the other, shouting 'Stop the car!'" Ms. Zhou said that the car was going very fast, and after traveling a certain distance, Li Shuhong was thrown off. Ms. Zhou quickly ran over and saw Li Shuhong lying motionless on the ground with blood all over his face.
Yuan Li is the vice president of Xi'an Fugui Property Management Company where Li Shuhong worked. Just before the incident, they had just parted ways. Yesterday afternoon, when talking about Li Shuhong, Yuan Li burst into tears. He told the reporter that on September 27th, motorcycles were stolen in the residential area. Through reviewing the surveillance footage, they found a suspicious silver bread van. On September 30th, this vehicle returned to the residential area. "Li Shuhong thought that during the National Day holiday, the owners would leave their homes, and the thieves might return," Yuan Li said. Li Shuhong decided to wait inside the residential area. On the day of the incident, he learned that the suspicious vehicle had returned to the residential area, and without hesitation, he went to intercept it, but he didn’t expect...
■ Suspect Tried to Crash Into Police Car When Arrested
After receiving the alarm, the Yanliang branch of the Xi'an Public Security Bureau immediately went to the scene to investigate the case. Deputy Director of the Criminal Investigation Brigade, Li Fei, introduced that the police formed a special investigation team and, through analyzing the surveillance footage, preliminarily identified two suspects. The police learned from the highway exit that this vehicle frequently entered and exited the Liucunbao toll station, traveling between Xi'an, Gaoling, Yanliang, and Shangluo. "We believed that after the incident, they would flee back to Xi'an," Li Fei said. That night, the police split into five groups and found the suspect vehicle in Wuyi Village of Sanqiao Street Office. The police waited around the vehicle. At around 3:30 AM yesterday morning, one suspect got into the car, and three police cars surrounded it. "We were just about to make the arrest when the suspect suddenly reversed, attempting to ram the police car," Li Fei said. Seeing the situation, seven police officers immediately rushed forward and smashed the car window glass by hand. The suspect resisted inside the car and was eventually subdued by the police, resulting in injuries to three police officers. The suspect was named Zhang Yanfeng, 21 years old, from Fuping County, Shaanxi Province. Subsequently, the police arrested his accomplice Tian Xiaojun, 25 years old, from Yijun County, at Yuhuazhai.
■ Two Thieves Suspected of Intentional Murder Detained
It was understood that Zhang Yanfeng and Tian Xiaojun were "cellmates", both having been sentenced for theft and released less than a year ago. They refused to repent and repeatedly committed thefts in places like Gaoling and Yanliang. On September 27th, after successfully stealing in Crown Garden, they returned to the residential area on the morning of October 7th but were discovered by the security guards. As they prepared to drive away, Li Shuhong intercepted them on the main road near the south gate of the residential area.
After a brief pause, the suspects stomped on the gas pedal to escape, and Li Shuhong grabbed the steering wheel. "The suspects continuously beat him and forcefully pried his hands loose," Li Fei said. The suspects dragged Li Shuhong for approximately 50 meters and then threw him off and sped away. Li Shuhong hit his head on the ground, causing severe brain injury, and despite emergency treatment, he unfortunately passed away.
Li Fei introduced that the two suspects did not cooperate with the police investigation, only admitting that their primary intention during the incident was to escape, deliberately accelerating to throw Li Shuhong off. They still did not know that Li Shuhong had passed away. Currently, due to suspicion of intentional murder, the two suspects have been criminally detained.
Family: He Regarded Work as His Life
At around 11 AM yesterday, at the morgue of the Yanliang No. 630 Hospital, relatives and friends set up an altar for Li Shuhong.
Love for Yanliang Made Him Stay
Li Shuhong was 44 years old, from Han川 City, Hubei Province, with eight siblings, and he was the third eldest. Due to poor family conditions, Li Shuhong became independent early and helped his parents take care of his younger siblings.
In 1984, Li Shuhong joined the army and came to Yanliang, becoming a truck driver, staying there for 26 years. Li Shuhong was 1.72 meters tall and very strong. In 1990, Li Shuhong met Gan Aijiao in his hometown. "After getting married, I came with him to Xi'an, thinking that after working for a while, we would return to our hometown of Hanchuan," his wife said. However, even after retiring from the military, he never returned to his hometown. Gan Aijiao asked him many times why he didn't go back. Each time, Li Shuhong said that he liked it here and didn't want to leave Yanliang.
The Pillar of the Family Who Didn't Take Care of It Much
In 1998, Li Shuhong retired from the military. His wife was not in good health, and the family mainly relied on him. After leaving the military, due to poor performance at his company, Li Shuhong worked various jobs. Besides running long-distance transport, he also did odd jobs. His wife remembered that once, after driving, Li Shuhong was covered in mud, "smelling worse than a toilet." Gan Aijiao, looking at her husband's appearance, knew that it was all for the family, yet she felt even more heartbroken. "Home was important to him, but he rarely took care of household matters," Gan Aijiao said. Li Shuhong left home very early for work. To avoid disturbing the family, he always left quietly. Sometimes, Li Shuhong worked overtime late into the night and slept on the sofa to avoid waking the family.
Work Was His Life
Yesterday, Li Jijun held his father Li Shuhong's third-class merit medal and placed it in front of the portrait. This honor was awarded in 1988 for bravely fighting against three thieves and saving an injured child. Gan Aijiao said, "He was that kind of person, from the army until now, regarding work as his life."
In 2006, Li Shuhong developed heart disease and underwent coronary artery bypass surgery, after which the doctor advised him to rest. "He only rested for half a year before rushing back to work." In 2009, Li Shuhong became the deputy manager in charge of security, and his work hours became even longer. "The security in the residential area wasn't great, and he often patrolled until midnight for everyone's safety. Even if he came home for a few hours, it was when we were sleeping."
At noon yesterday, the reporter visited Li Shuhong's home, and Gan Aijiao opened the drawer, where several boxes of medicine were stored. "Every day, he took at least seven kinds of medicine. Since the last surgery, his body never fully recovered, but once he started working, he didn't think about it much."
Friend: His Hardships Were Never Shared
Shi Yuhua has known Li Shuhong for ten years, and Li Jijun calls him "Uncle Stone."
"At 12:10 PM on October 7th, I was driving to drop off a friend when Li Jijun called me," Shi Yuhua clearly remembers: "He cried in the phone saying 'Dad is gone.' I was stunned, thinking I hadn't heard correctly, so I asked him to repeat it." Li Jijun told Shi Yuhua that his father Li Shuhong had been "run over by a car and killed." Shi Yuhua immediately shed tears and asked his friend to get out of the car while he turned around and drove towards the hospital.
Li Shuhong was once employed by Shi Yuhua to drive and run transportation. In 2006, after undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery, Shi Yuhua hesitated to hire him again, but Li Shuhong kept coming back. "I knew that his family depended on his income." Shi Yuhua agreed to let Li Shuhong work but asked him to run fewer trips, to which Li Shuhong replied, "If I run fewer trips, you will lose money."
Shi Yuhua said that because of his heart disease, Li Shuhong carried a small bag of medicine wherever he went. During meals, he would take out several bottles and laughingly say, "It's time to take my medicine." Li Shuhong once told Shi Yuhua that if he were a policeman, he would catch a lot of criminals.
Shi Yuhua recounted that once, while eating with Li Shuhong, he brought up family matters, and Li Shuhong actually cried, lamenting that he was far from home and could not fulfill his filial duties to his parents. "He was an outgoing person, but these worries, perhaps, he never shared even with his family."
District Party Secretary: Advocating for Honors According to Policy
At 11 AM yesterday, District Party Secretary Miao Baoming and others consoled Li Shuhong's family and presented them with a 10,000 yuan condolence payment.
Miao Baoming said, "Li Shuhong loved his job and was highly responsible, safeguarding social justice and promoting righteousness. Such a spirit should be strongly advocated." Miao Baoming also required that the entire Yanliang district learn from Li Shuhong's conscientious and responsible attitude towards work, making criminals tremble with fear. Relevant departments should handle Li Shuhong's posthumous affairs generously and create conditions for Li Shuhong's son's employment. Additionally, honors should be pursued according to relevant policies.
In the afternoon yesterday, at the Crown Garden Community Residents' Committee, many homeowners choked up when talking about Li Shuhong. In most neighbors' memories, this chubby security manager would greet people proactively. Besides protecting the community's safety, Li Shuhong often helped others. An elderly woman with gray hair spoke tearfully, "This is an ordinary person doing extraordinary things." Homeowners said they hope Li Shuhong's heroic actions can be recognized posthumously.
