Xinhua News Agency, Nanjing - On the evening of the 20th, a young woman celebrated her 20th birthday by treating more than ten friends at a restaurant near Yifeng Gate in Xiaguan, Nanjing. However, by 10:30 PM, as the restaurant was about to close, no one at the table showed any intention of paying the bill. The main celebrant of the birthday dinner had even hidden herself in the restroom and refused to come out. Eventually, a female waitress coaxed her out, only for her to claim that she had no money.
According to the restaurant's waitstaff, the woman, surnamed Zhu, had come earlier in the day to reserve a table for her 20th birthday celebration, bringing along a large cake and saying that a group of friends would be gathering together in the evening. By dinnertime, more than a dozen of Zhu’s friends arrived and the group feasted until around 10 PM. As the guests gradually left, only Zhu, the birthday celebrant, and three men remained. It became clear to the restaurant staff that none of them intended to pay the bill. When Zhu claimed she needed to use the restroom and asked the three men to wait outside, they ended up waiting for half an hour.
The owner of the restaurant then realized that Zhu had no intention of settling the bill and instructed a waitress to bring her out from the restroom. To everyone's surprise, Zhu admitted that she didn’t have enough money to pay and requested to sign a tab instead. When it became evident that neither Zhu nor the three accompanying men could produce the money, the restaurant called the police. Upon arrival, officers from the Yuejianglou Police Station took Zhu into custody. That night, the police contacted Zhu’s family and arranged for them to pay the over 1000 yuan banquet fee.
