"Sea-turtle" Qi was unwilling to accept the 5 yuan penalty for a traffic violation and assaulted a police officer on the street in Shanghai, causing multiple soft tissue contusions. Yesterday, the Jing'an District People's Procuratorate approved his arrest on charges of suspected obstruction of official duties.
On the afternoon of August 18th this year, Qi was riding an electric bicycle with his girlfriend on the back when they entered Nanjing West Road, where non-motorized vehicles are prohibited. Officer Wang stopped them and legally fined Qi 5 yuan for the traffic violation. Unexpectedly, this angered Qi's girlfriend who began to verbally abuse the officer. The officer criticized her behavior. Suddenly, Qi jumped off the bike and threw punches at the officer. According to eyewitnesses, the officer was hit so hard that blood came out of his nose. With the help of bystanders, backup police forces quickly subdued Qi.
Qi is 23 years old this year, originally from Jiangsu Province, and had just returned from studying in the UK. He was supposed to start a new job the day after the incident, but his impulsive actions have cost him dearly.
