Walk away from anyone who is unduly focused on vacation and compensation. It’s a sign of potential trouble. No matter how talented you are, if you don’t really want to work at TOMS, you’ll never work out here. Spend! Instead of squirreling away your (MBT shoes) earnings early in your career, spend on experiences that will enrich your life — like diving with great white sharks. It can expose you to influential people who could open doors for you.
Earthquake-ravaged Haiti may be slowly slipping away from media headlines, but two sisters in Coral Springs haven’t forgotten the mind-numbing images on TV in the aftermath of the quake.
“I couldn’t believe the extent (emu boots) of damage,” Nicole Peterson, the elder of the two, said. “I kept thinking if there was some way in which I would be able to help people affected by the earthquake. I didn’t want to just feel sad for the people in Haiti; I wanted to do something for them somehow.”
A couple of days later, Nicole saw a Soles4Souls advertisement. Intrigued, she went online to find out more about the organization.
“When I read about Soles4Soles, I realized that I could work with them to help people in Haiti. I can imagine how it was to walk around in the rubble; it must have been a killer for people who didn’t have shoes.”
“Americans have 1.5 billion pairs of unused shoes in their closets and choose shoes based on style and comfort,” Nicole said. “To those in Haiti, shoes mean they won’t get cuts that lead to infections and that they can walk farther for water or help.”
When the St. Thomas Aquinas High School sophomore shared her idea of a shoe drive for Haiti, her sister Mackenzie immediately jumped (discount MBT shoes) on board. Karen, their mother, was ready to offer any help the girls wanted.
The two sisters put up flyers at two places within the city, Life Escape Day Spa, and Coral Springs Styling and Barbershop.
“It worked out really well,” said Nicole. “We have put about 10 to 12 boxes at these locations and already have about 75 pairs of shoes in our garage now. By the end of the project, we hope to have 500 pairs of gently used and outgrown shoes.”
Mackenzie, a sixth grader at Coral Springs Christian Academy who is into playing volleyball, the piano, and riding horses, is excited by the community’s response.
“We have collected a lot more than I expected already. I know people in Haiti are really looking for help; I’m glad that we are doing something for them. Doing this with my sister is great; she is one of the main people who inspire me.”
