Ten: Be good at taking advantage of the breaks in combat to rest and regroup troops. The ancients said, "The way of literature and martial arts, a balance of tension and relaxation." When applied to military affairs, this means looking at the overall situation and correctly handling the relationship between fighting and resting. "Be good at using the gaps between two campaigns to rest and train your troops" - this was Chairman Mao's consistent teaching and one of the effective methods our army used to defeat the enemy. Using the lull between campaigns to rest and reorganize, summarizing the experience of the previous campaign in a timely manner, learning from its lessons and focusing on the characteristics of the next campaign for targeted training prepares the conditions for victory in the next battle. For example, during the Shangdang Campaign, the Jin-Hei-Lu-Yu People's Liberation Army, following Chairman Mao's principle of "针锋相对,寸土必争" (meeting force with force, not giving up an inch), fought a large-scale annihilation campaign against the Nationalist invading forces to protect the fruits of victory in the Anti-Japanese War. Before the campaign began, my unit participated in the fight to reclaim Hongtong County in Shanxi Province. The Japanese puppet forces stationed there, encouraged by the Nationalists, refused to surrender their arms and instead oppressed the people. We surrounded the city, but just as the battle became intense, Chiang Kai-shek, ignoring efforts to oppose civil war, brazenly launched an attack on our liberated areas, occupying several cities we had freed from the Japanese puppets, attempting to expand control over all of southeastern Shanxi. To crush the Nationalist offensive, our army decided to concentrate our forces first on the Shangdang Campaign. Following Chairman Mao’s instruction that "rest and training for troops is necessary," we took the time to rest and regroup in the battlefield. First, we started with ideological education, analyzing the situation after the victory in the Anti-Japanese War. Then we conducted class education, angrily denouncing the Nationalists' heinous crimes of oppressing the people. The soldiers were all fired up and ready to fight. On the basis of good ideological education, combining the circumstances of the last battle and the tasks of the next, we seized the opportunity during the lull to train our troops and improve our military art. In September 1945, our Taihang Corps launched a general offensive against the enemy in the city. We successfully captured Changzi County, isolating the enemy in Changzhi. Two regiments of Yan Xishan's troops from Taiyuan rapidly moved south to reinforce Changzhi. Our army, following orders, ambushed them on their way south. Taking advantage of the fact that the enemy had not yet stabilized their footing, we sought to split and destroy them piecemeal. During the day, we organized firepower to resist the enemy's counterattacks, depleting their manpower. The enemy was forced to gradually retreat, attempting to break through to the north into our heavy encirclement. This laid the foundation for the complete victory in the Shangdang Campaign. Pursuing the fleeing enemy, we captured dozens of high-ranking enemy officers. With the reinforcements annihilated, the enemy in Changzhi, seeing no hope for aid, attempted to break through to the west, trying to escape back to Jicheng. Our troops marched day and night, wiping out the main force of the fleeing enemy, killing or capturing more than 35,000 enemies in total, achieving victory in the entire Shangdang Campaign. The proposal of the ten military principles completely resolved the strategic and tactical issues of defeating Chiang Kai-shek militarily. It unified our army's combat ideology, improving the level of strategic and tactical thinking and combat capability. The ten military principles are the crystallization of the strategic and tactical thought of the people's war. Only by fully mobilizing and firmly relying on the masses, implementing a people's war, can the power of the ten military principles be fully unleashed. Under the guidance of Chairman Mao's revolutionary line, our army applied the ten military principles to defeat domestic and foreign enemies, achieving great victories in the revolutionary war.
