The term "极客" is a translation of the English word "Geek," also translated as “奇客.” In the past, it was used to refer to cruel circus performers and the detestable, otherworldly computer enthusiasts, portraying their image as free-thinking and rebellious computer hippies. For a long time in Western culture, the meaning of "geek" carried a somewhat derogatory connotation. During the early stages of the PC revolution, "Geek" evolved into a general derogatory term for computer hackers. These individuals possessed extremely high technical skills, and their obsession with computers and networks sometimes reached abnormal levels. However, today, with the growing prevalence of the internet, these marginal figures once regarded as oddities have suddenly been thrust center stage by the hand of history, transforming into the mainstream of society. The Geeks themselves take pride in their "outsider" identity and have a religious-like fervor in their belief in the power of technology.
