"Director Meng, I still feel unwell. Could there really be something wrong with me?" On the morning of the previous day, at the Psychiatric Outpatient Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, 25-year-old Zhang Huan (a pseudonym) sat dejectedly on a stool, sighing loudly, and looking blankly at Director Meng Huaqing with lifeless eyes.
The young man believed he had contracted AIDS.
Zhang Huan works at a machinery factory in Shapingba District. On September 10, which was his birthday, after drinking heavily and being encouraged by some friends, they went together to a roadside beauty salon. "After sobering up, I deeply regretted it," Zhang Huan said painfully when recalling that impulsive act two months ago.
The next day, Zhang Huan felt like he was "doomed." Filled with fear, he went to Southwest Hospital for an HIV test, but the result showed no issues. Zhang Huan returned home feeling uneasy, not eating or drinking anything, convinced that he had contracted AIDS.
"In the last two months, I've basically visited all the major hospitals and disease control centers in the city, and the results have all shown normal conditions," Zhang Huan said. During this time, he experienced symptoms such as alternating chills and fever, back pain, itching all over his body, and insomnia, leading to a weight loss from 160 pounds to 130 pounds.
Zhang Huan stubbornly believed he had AIDS and had attempted suicide several times.
It turned out to be anxiety and depression disorder.
At the end of October, under the guidance of his parents, Zhang Huan, who had become emaciated and lethargic, came to the Psychological Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University.
After understanding Zhang Huan's situation, Director Meng personally took him to the hospital for tests. "He has developed an anxiety-depression disorder," Director Meng said. Through conversations, he judged from Zhang Huan's expressions and reactions that Zhang Huan had scared himself excessively, losing rationality due to extreme tension and hyperfocus.
After more than half a month of medication and psychological treatment, many of Zhang Huan's doubts were alleviated. "I estimate that after about two months of standardized treatment, his symptoms will gradually disappear," Director Meng said.
Young people need to maintain self-discipline.
"I have already treated over ten patients with similar psychological disorders," Director Meng said. They all made mistakes due to temporary impulsiveness or loss of reason and subsequently misdiagnosed themselves with AIDS.
Director Meng emphasized that young people must learn to maintain self-discipline and not let their impulses take control, nor lose their minds further by overly worrying and paying too much attention, even blindly associating physical symptoms with diseases, scaring themselves unnecessarily.
He reminded citizens to trust medical examinations from reputable hospitals and doctors' diagnoses, avoiding excessive tension.
